Hi Bees. I got my BFP (well, several actually) yesterday!! We’re so excited! But now I have my first question already. I already had a hair appointment for a trim and root touch up today with my SIL who’s my hairdresser. I’ve read conflicting information online, from it being ok to dye your hair anytime during pregnancy, to it only being ok after the first trimester to it never being ok. I’ve also read that it’s ok, but just tell the hairdresser and try and keep it off the scalp as much as possible, and leave it on for as little a time as possible. My first doctors appointment isn’t until tomorrow. What are all your thoughts on it? I’m thinking I’d rather be safe than sorry and wait until after the first trimester, but my gray roots are awful now! I’ll just have to pony tail it until then I guess. And then there’s the question of what to tell my SIL. We weren’t planning on telling people for awhile, but how will I explain not getting my hair done (when it’s already overdue for a touch up now).

CanadianBride456: I had my hair colored several times during my pregancy. Had no issues, as long as good ventilation you should be fine. If really worried about it contact your doctors office and ask for their advice

If you just got your BFP, I’m assuming you’re like 4 weeks, barely? Baby is still just a clump of cells doing whatever it’s going to do and hasn’t really offically become an embryo yet, so I’d guess an appoitnment today would be just fine.

I have several hairstylist friends that worked all the way through their pregnancies doing hair color and what not, you should be fine 🙂 Plenty of girls from the September group have gotten their hair done sometime during the first tri.

I’m in the camp that thinks it’s perfectly ok to dye your hair while preganant but it’s definitely a personal decesion. They no longer use things like formaldehyde that were proven harmful and the ones they do use don’t get into your system enough to affect the baby. I wouldn’t be dying my hair every day but once every few months is totally fine IMO. If you’re super worried then try a demi permanant dye, they’re not nearly as harsh since they don’t have any lifting agents but you can only go darker.
I really reccomend reading Expecting Better, she goes into detail and presents the research and studies behind a lot of the things we’re supposed to stay away from in pregancy and allows you to make your own choices based on the data rather than strangers opinions on the internet. She addresses hair dye and if I remember correctly, the only ones affected by dye were hair dressers who come in contact with it all day every day, even they had a VERY small percentage that showed any affects at all.

CanadianBride456: I say it’s fine to get your hair done. I went in for my full head highlights at 7 weeks and was a little nervous, but I figure hair stylists get pregnant and work throughout their pregnancy and they are like 10000X more exposed to all the chemicals than their clients are. I just made sure to cover my nose under the heat/dryer thing because the smell was making me nauseous and I didn’t want to toss my cookies in a salon.
I say you’re fine, but you can call and ask your doctor. I’m going back on Wednesday 🙂

Nothing, you are fine. You are fine to dye your hair throughout your pregnancy.

I got highlights when I was pregnant and my hair dresser was actually pregnant at the time too! Lol it’s perfectly safe and okay.

I got full color and highlights a few days before I found out I was pregnant. I’ve stayed away from full color since then and have only done highlights because the color doesn’t touch the scalp.

CanadianBride456: It’s safe. I am 6w2d today, and asked my GP when I met with her a couple weeks ago, with just questions and an OB referral, about this… and she said it was fine.
The danger is back in the day when girls would color their hair in places with poor ventilation. These days, most salons are nice and spacious, so it’s usually not a concern.
I am desperately in need of a cut and color (highlights) and plan to do so in the next coming weeks, with no concerns.

I dyed my hair throughout my pregnancy with my daughter and this one as well (27weeks currently). My doctor said it was fine and my hairdresser said as long as we’re not doing intense bleach it’s ok.

I have always been told it’s personal preference… like others have said, good ventilation and you should be fine 🙂 Have fun!

Thanks so much for your advice Bees! I think I probably will touch up my roots to cover my greys, but I’m going to wait and ask my doctor tomorrow just to be on the safe side and to calm my worries! So I’ve rescheduled for later in the week. You all always seem to calm me down!
