After realizing I am so far from traditional it’s not funny I really struggled with the dress piece.
For one, I used to weigh over 300 lbs. In the last year I lost another 94 lbs and now I’m at 168.
The idea of a fancy dress/wedding dress has always scared me. Trying on dresses was quite the obstacle. Being a natural red head didn’t help either until I realized I could wear ivory, creams or champagnes.
Then I started to warm up to the idea.
So i went to a few stores here in Chicago and realized I didn’t fit the whole Bride thing…What i mean is, i wanted to look like a ‘bride’ the dress, the poof etc…but it just wasn’t me.
The idea of having a semi-formal affair and a 1950s early 60s style wedding is what i wanted. We’re getting married on my parents 50th anniversary so a short dress was on my mind, but despite there being quite a few out there they were not for me.
I tried on about 11 dresses total and even went to brides against breast cancer sale- WHICH I highly recommend if you want a traditional dress and they are were incredibly sweet, and finally..i said screw it I am going to bhldn.
Living in Chicago I am lucky enough that they have a store here. I really didn’t think I would fit their clothes, losing a ton of weight doesn’t make you realize what you can wear.
Behold…(pun intended) i could wear the dress I have eyed for 3 months and I didn’t even need the biggest size, in fact I ended up with a size 10 and a dress that is me! Sorry for the book above, here is the pic!
In the photos i’m wearing a size 12, they wanted me to try on the 10 that fit even better and I purchased that. i’m 5’5. They are sized generous in my opinion at least in this style.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!! That is an amazing accomplishment.
Second of all, that dress is beautiful! It seems like it’s met all of your requirements.
Are you going to accessorize it or let the dress speak for itself?

aw thank you!!!
I plan to get a bird cage veil with an embellished fascinator of sorts that i can wear without the birdcage, thankfully I’m crafty enough to make one or have a friend help me who is even more crafty.
I think some dramatic pearls and such would be good, not the crappy ones in picture 🙂
I also am eyeing/trying to track down a pair of irregular choice shoes…so yes i love accessories 🙂
and seriously thank you again some days I still don’t recognize ‘me’.

Thank you, it took a long time to get that big so it took some time to lose it- wish I looked a bit more together in that photo, but I had just finished crying lol.

aww thank you! Yes i’m starting to own feeling good about myself. I still don’t really see myself that size, I mean I can see it, but geez it’s still weird. i’m 31 and wear the size I wore at age 12. it’s wild!
and thank you, the dress just i mean obviously you all don’t know me, but it suits me. I felt confident, pretty and me, which is not something clothing ever made me feel.
I’m not even fake smiling!
