Hi there!  I’m from Santa Cruz, CA (about 70 miles north of Big Sur) and travel there all the time, even though I now live in LA.  The drive to Big Sur is breathtaking, and if you don’t mind a long roadtrip, I would definitely recommend driving up there.  Of course, flying is faster and you’ll experience the scenic drive from Monterey to Big Sur going south on Highway 1, so you really can’t lose either way!

My favorite way to get there from LA that doesn’t take nearly as long as the 101 or taking the 1 all the way up is to take the 5 north to the 46 east (the highway James Dean died on) and take that all the way to Cambria, which is positioned at the southern end of the Big Sur Coast.  If you drive north a bit you can see elephant seals in San Simeon — second largest breeding area for them in the country and you can see them right from the parking lot, no hike required.  Take Highway 1 for about 1.5 hours until you reach the town of Big Sur.  The drive is breathtaking and the rock formations in the ocean almsot look lunar.

I highly recommend the following sites:

-McWay Falls in Julia Pheiffer Burns state park

-Pheiffer beach — which has purple sand!

– Dinner and cocktails at Nepenthe Restaurant

-There are many adorable places to stay in Big Sur, including the Ventana Inn and the Post Ranch Inn , which is expensive but gorgeous, and  their restaurant Sierra Mar is a must if you want a romantic dinner — the view there is literally jaw-dropping as it’s right on an ocean cliff

My good friend was married in Big Sur and rented a private home off of vrbo.com.  For $500 night she had a big house with panoramic views and huge windows.  It was right on a cliff and beautiful.  I highly recommend it!

Enjoy your mini moon. 🙂
