So I’m a virgin and waiting until marriage to have sex, but I am going to go ahead and get on birth control so I can get used to/plan for my wedding in Dec. I have my first gyno appointment soon. But I am VERY afraid of starting BC. My mom had a lot of trouble with side effects so she stopped taking it, but that was 20+ years ago. I’m mainly just worried about gaining weight, mood swings, side effects, and not feeling like myself. I know this is something I need to get used to taking, but I’m so worried about all these things! How was your experience starting BC for the first time?

My experience with BC for the first time actually went pretty well. It cleared up my acne, I gained a little weight but not a lot and no mood swings. Sometimes it is hit or miss for some people.

I began birth control three weeks before my wedding. I, too, was worried about side effects and because I have heart problems, many doctors were hesitant in putting me on anything. But, so far, so good!
I’m on Levora, which I got from PP. And the doctor said to take 100mg of vitamin B6 a day to help with water weight gain.

@christmasbride13: Good for you for being responsible and pro-active!
Most women I know had no problems with BC. For the sake of honesty and the big picture though, I have to say I never did find one that worked well for me. I would take one brand for 3-6 months and my doctor would switch me to another because of side effects including weight gain, worsening PMS, and 2 week periods that were not even during the placebo days. I tried the tri-phasil ones, and my doctor even tried a combination of BC and Premarin (extra estrogen). The theory was that I was previously some sort of super-estrogen-producing she-ra and the BC was suppressing my own production of it but not providing as much as my body was used to for normal functioning. I loved my awesome new boobs, but it didn’t fix the issues. After 5 or 6 years and countless brands, I finally made an appointment to get an IUD, but I quit the BC before the appointment…. and uh…. yeah, don’t do that. Because for all the side effects, the pills apparently were preventing pregnancy, since the second I quit taking them BAM — zygote implanted.
I’m sure I’m just a freak and you’ll have a better experience, like dozens of my friends and family. Most women have shorter, lighter periods, less PMS, and less acne while on the pill. If you do have side effects, give it several months to regulate before trying a new brand. And on the off chance you decide it’s not for you, make sure to have your backup method in place before stopping! (But don’t tell my kids I said that)

I started taking BC when I was 16, I threw up like 18 hours after I took the first pill and haven’t had any problems since. My periods became more regular and lighter, my cramps went away. I don’t bloat anymore. Really BC was the best thing I could have done for myself. It hasn’t affected me negativly at all. You are going to hear some horror stories and some like mine, the best thing is to discuss options and don’t be afraid to change methods or brands if one isn’t working for you. I hope everything works out for you!!!

I’ve only ever had good results with taking BC. I started taking it really young because I was having horrible menstrual cramps. It did the trick and other than relieving the cramping the only other thing I notice is that my periods are super light. No other issues whatsoever.
