Commenting to follow… I’ve been considering switching from the pill to skyla /mirena for this reason! Plus I forget the pill easily!

I switched from the pill to Skyla due to DVT, but I did experience the decreased drive while on BCP. That’s been completely fixed with the Skyla. Since there are verrrry tiny amounts of hormones (and no estrogen), I’ve found the side effects I experienced on BCP went away – especially the moodiness and decreased sex drive.

I do not get a period anymore, which is just fine with me, since I was on Seasonale prior to the switch. My flow prior to this was pretty average (super heavy for a couple days, then light for a couple days) so you might have a different experience. I have gotten maybe 4 days of random super light spotting (not even enough to warrant a tampon or more than a pantyliner) since I got my Skyla inserted in February. I do not have enough good things to say about it. Not having the estrogen (and all the health risks associated with that) and not having to remember to do anything for 3 years were the big selling points for me.

FutureMrsDinATL:  Oh my goodness, I cannot tell you how getting off BCP and onto Skyla has changed my life! For a long time BCP worked wonders for me and I loved every minute of it, then about 12-16 months ago, my sex drive took a nose dive. I finally got off the BCP and had a Skyla put in about three months ago, and let me tell you what, this hot mama is back in the saddle! I’ve noticed that I not only initiate sex more and have a higher sex drive, but I actually experience better orgasms and just overall better sensation during sex. The insertion process for the Skyla isn’t fun at all, but I’m so glad I went through it because my relationship is better, I’m less stressed because I’m actually enjoying myself, and I still don’t have to worry about pregnancy. If your insurance covers it (which it should) or you can find a clinic that offers them for free, GO FOR IT!

FutureMrsDinATL:  I’d say that within a week or two, I started noticing a difference. After insertion of the IUD, my gyno told me to wait a full week before intercourse, but being the overachiever that I am, I decided to give it two weeks just to be sure. By day 8, I threw that plan out the window!

i do still get my period, although I’ve only had skyla for about 3 months, so that may change. I’ve noticed that my period is shorter than it was, but I spot for several days before and after.

Posting to follow.  I’ve never heard of Skyla so I’m interested to hear people’s experiences.

I went from Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo to a Mirena IUD about 2 years ago and since then my sex drive has been extremely low.  I do also have depression so that medication could also be a factor, but everything seemed to decline right when I got the IUD.

I went on the Mirena and I noticed a complete turn around from when I was on BC pretty immediately after I got it.

FutureMrsDinATL:  So glad you asked this question! Thanks ladies for sharing your experiences. I’m going to ask my gyno about Skyla at my annual appointment next month. Following this thread now!
