The day started off with what was supposed to be a surprise breakfast with a friend. After having breakfast and catching up, we headed back to his car to go home, he said, “I have to be honest. ALL of this was a ruse. You were set up and this is what I was supposed to do.” He handed me a sealed package labeled “Open Immediately.” Inside were instructions, an emergency cellphone charger and a one-way ticket to Oakland. To my disbelief, I was hesitant to follow through. I was panicking and before I got stubborn enough to protest, my friend assured me that it’s all in good fun and was set up by SO. My SO wasn’t going to put me in any danger after all. Once I calmed down (as best as I could), he said “Now, it’s time to go home b/c you need to pack!!!”
We rushed back home and helped me pack according to the travel list on the instructions, added myself to the Facebook group as instructed and headed to airport. There, I was surprised by SO’s sister, who was my next travel buddy. From the moment we got to security until the flight, I kept asking her questions about upcoming events with no success. All she said was that she was only instructed to fly with me and that she was visiting a friend of her’s. When we arrived in Oakland, we got picked up in Oakland by another friend and dropped off my SO’s sister at the train station to visit her friend. Just as we dropped her off, a clue was posted on Facebook, indicating where the next destination will be. It ended up to be Farley’s East, which is a cafe in Oakland were my SO and I used to hang out while he waits for me while I was at work. We ordered drinks and chatted for a while. The next thing I knew clue #2 popped out and my 3rd travel buddy came.
Clue #2 led us to Yogurt Shack, where my SO and I would get yogurt while I was living in the Bay. We snacked on yogurt and caught up. A while after, my friend showed up and clue #3 popped up. Next clue led to the fortune cookie factory in Chinatown SF that my SO took me to make me feel better after a horrible dim sum experience. My 4th travel buddy and I took the BART to the city, ran to catch a bus and searched for the cookie factory. When we finally got there, I bought some cookies and went over to a boba place to chat while we await for the next clue. After a while, a clue was posted that read “Your fortune reads: Clue #4 – Go to where it all started. Ciao Bella!” I said, “The Marriott!” Next thing I knew, a group of my friends came. We started walking to the hotel but halfway through, 2 of them said that their “sources” indicated we were going to the wrong place and that I should read the clue again. And just as I was repeating myself, it came to me that “ciao bella” meant something, and shouted “OMG, how could I missed that? It’s the Italian restaurant we first had dinner.”
When we finally got to the restaurant (Chiascurro), EVERYone was there to surprise me including my SO! A couple of our friends even drove from LA. Dinner went on, and they were asking about my experience – whether I was scared or not. My SO said that since he always make a big deal about his birthdays and we never really plan anything for mine, he just wanted to do something big for my birthday. At this time, I really thought it was just for my birthday. Who ever thought there was something much more… They ordered me a soufflé and everyone crowded around me to sing happy birthday. After I blew out my candle, I thanked everyone. Afterwards, my SO said that he has a speech. He thanked everyone for participating because it was hard work to have everyone come together. He said that everyone must really care and love me this much…. “Which brings me to this… will you marry me?” as he grab for a tiny box and got down on one knee. I shouted “OMG, of course!”
And the rest is history…
