Hi Bees, I need help picking a gift for my 12 year old female cousin. Her birthday is this Friday and I’m going to a girls party for her on Saturday.
She likes some girly things like nail polish and clothes but at the same time she loves to play with frogs and fish.
Anyone have an idea for a creative gift?
My budget is around $30-$40….

@julies1949: “His Dark Materials”??? She likes Harry Potter but I love Harry Potter…maybe more of a present for me…
She did just get a digital camera for Christmas so maybe a scrapbooking kit would be good for her! Thanks for the suggestion!

Maybe a gift certificate for a manicure and some cute Pjs?

You could get her a GC for Aeropostale or American Eagle. Those seem to be popular stores! Are you close with her at all? You could do a manicure day with each other.
There are also these things called African Dwarf Frogs. They live in a really small container. They are easy to take care of (you feed them twice a week and clean their tank once every 3-4 months). I got some for my classroom and they were about $25. I got them at a teacher store, but you could even get them at a pet store. A friend of mine even said she got hers at a Hallmark store–imagine that!

Some friends of mine have twins who just turned 13 last week – they were ECSTATIC about their new cell phones 🙂 Not really a gift an Aunt can give though, haha, and definitely not in your price range.
What about a sketch journal, or a subscription to a magazine?

“His Dark Materials” is great. Also, a lot of kids who love Harry Potter also love Rick Riordan’s books (“the Lightning Thief” et al)–but they’re very popular, so there’s a chance she’s read them already.
The American Apparel nail polish is super fun because it comes in all those colors (but I dunno–maybe she’s the type who will ooh and aah over a Chanel polish?)
A subscription to a teen-friendly magazine, like TeenPeople or Seventeen?
I like to check out Urban Outfitters for fun things for teens (they have some cute jewelry stands, for example) and cheap jewelry to boot.
And then kids usually love gift certificates–iTunes would be a safe bet. (Although I totally understand if you didn’t want to do that–I find that teens tend to lose gc’s!)

I had an aunt who always got us lotions and body spray from Victoria’s Secret, and we always loved it. Maybe try getting a gift basket from Bath and Body Works (I wouldn’t do VS for obvious reasons, lol).

I vote for the age-appropriate beauty items. Lipgloss, nail polish, lotion, etc. Or maybe a purse? I liked the idea of a scrapbooking kit too. Shopping for girls is so much easier than shopping for boys 🙂
