So, I’m in university and have a large group of close friends – which is great! except there is always a birthday, and our friends usually want to do fairly involved plans, including presents. this ends up being pretty expensive – and sometimes awkward because friends ask us to chip in to a large present/pick a super fancy restaurant etc.
My attitude is more casual, we’re in university, let’s have dinner at a pub and go out! Instead, we’re often being invited to birthday dinners at fancy restaurants where our friends exchange expensive gifts and then to upscale clubs…My SO and I have discussed it, and it feels like this is happening every month (our group is about 10 ppl) and we can’t do it all the time. These are restaurants that we don’t even go to on date nights etc. and we’re saving for travel and engagement/post grad etc.
So there are two birthdays coming in the coming months and I’m needing ideas of gifts that are thoughtful and nice, but not insanely expensive. For instance, flowers and a bottle of champagne or cava? Is that impersonal? I love paper products so a very nice card would accompany. Cute cookie cutters, sprinkles etc, gourmet cake mix all in a pretty mixing bowl for a friend who loves to bake?
I should say that our friends aren’t high maintenance or snobby – this just seems to be the norm in this group, and I want to celebrate with them, but it needs to more reasonable than it has been.
So tell me bees – what are your go to gifts?
