Paper lanterns are pretty inexpensive, though you may want to check with local rental companies and see if you can go that route. I spent some time investigating pricing because I want to do a chandelier like this:

I found this place to have a great color selection and very reasonable prices, http://www.paperlanternstore.com/evriropala.html

A lot more than I expected. I don’t know my exact dimensions but we had quoted to do 130 ft of lights zig zagged accross a big semi circle concrete patio and total cost I think it would have been $500. The lights themselves were $1.5 /ft but that doesn’t include the poles, stands, clips, extra bulbs, etc which added up to be more than the lights themselves cost.

My solution was to buy the light strands at target ($8/21 ft strand I think?) and just rented the bare minimum of poles/bases and had my wedding planner/decorator hang them. It was a lot of work for her but it saved me about $250!
