I think your sister is right; it’s just a cover, but you can put it over any comforter. 🙂

yep, usually people put feather comforters inside a duvet so you may want to register for one of those as well.

Actually, technically the duvet is the insert and is traditionaly made with feathers, the duver cover goes on top to protect it and so that it does not need to be washed as much.  If the one you like is a duvet cover, go ahead and register for it.  If you currently have a conforter or duvet you can use that inside the cover.  Or just register for a duvet or plane solid white or light shade conforter as well.

You can use it by itself as well as a bedspread but since it is designed to hled the duvet it will not give a crisp appearance or much more wormth than a sheet.

If on the other hand it is a duvet and not a duveet cover you are looking at then, yes you can use it without a cover.  There is more wear on the duvet as you will need to have it dry cleaned or washed more frequently but they are a lot more stylish than they used to be,

I love duvets — registier for it, and then register for the feather comforter (or material of your choice) that goes with it.  Duvet’s are better than comforters because you can wash them in your own machine!  Comforters have to be taken to an industrial machine. Perfect if you have animals that leave hair on you bed (I have a cat) and better for you!  Also,  if you like to change your look througout the year can can get several Duvets for different seasons. They fold up smaller than a comforter, so you can store them easier.

tberry is absolutely right – the duvet is the white or cream feather comforter.  The duvet cover is the huge pillowcase-type thing that goes over the comforter.  Since you can’t throw the feather comforter in the washing machine, but have to get it dry cleaned, you probably want to use it with a cover that can be washed when it gets dirty.  However you can also spread a pretty sheet over the duvet – that is what they often do in European hotels, and I see it more and more in this country too.
