I grew up with my mom telling me that brown and black don’t go together but I’m realizing now that my mom had a lot of weird “fashion” rules. Is this one that sticks? Would you wear brown boots with black pants/legging? Does it depend on the outfit?

Depends on the outfit but I wear that combo pretty frequently. Usually with a white shirt and jean jacket.
Eta: if I’m ever unsure, I get inspiration on Pinterest. If I like it in the pics, I assume it’d look good in real life. That combo is pretty common on there.

I love black with brown! I wear it all the time. I think saying they don’t go together is an outdated fashion rule.

My husband would greatly disagree with that and he is an artist. I used to never wear black and brown together until he came along and was like there’s no artistic reason not too… Now I do it all the time and no one has ever said anything about it.

I also heard the same rule growing up, haha. And now I see TONS of black/brown combos that I love and partake in.

Thanks bees! I was actually just checking out Pinterest boards and it seems fairly common. It’s weird how that “rule” has stuck around in my brain all this time. Definitely using this combo tonight!

I have one pair of high light brown boots that I love wearing with black dresses and leggings. I like the contrast 🙂

I frequently wear warm/”cognac” colored brown or lighter beige items with black (hello, Uggs and leggings!) The only brown/black combo that I strongly dislike is chocolate brown with black.

I think it depends on the shade of brown. I wear black leggings with tan or burnt orange, but I wouldn’t wear black leggins with a dark brown shoe, no real reason I think the same rules just got burnt into my brain as a kid haha!

I wear a lot or brown
I wear a lot of black
early in the morning I dont care
so Ive probably worn them together… if it looks ok then why should it bother anyone
yes in fact I definately have… I wore a black leather jacket, black top, black shorts, black tights and dark chocolate brown thigh high boots, brown lipstick and had two tone chocolate and red hair – it looked great
I think if you have brown hair matching that to shoes/bags always looks good and balances out the bodies colour palet regardless of a black base

it depends on the exact brown color of the boot but I think it can look great and wear it all the time.

I think it sort of depends on the texture combo, and other factors aside from color alone. Brown leather boots are basically like blue jeans in that they can go with pretty much anything, black leggings included. However, I would probably not wear a brown dress with black leggings. Or dark brown pants with black flats, kind of like how navy/black sometimes look funky together.
Generally though, black and brown are fine together!

Just wore these thigh highs with black leggings this morning! I’d say go for it.

Same here, it’s hard to remove those old rules from the brain, right? I JUST started wearing navy and black together, and they go together so well!! 😀

Tan/cognac/camel/light brown – totally ok! Dark brown should not be worn with black, in my opinion. The colors are just too close together.
