My invites have the phrase “formal attire requested” which would be similar to black tie.

I wouldn’t include the actual spelling out of what you expect on your invite but rather on your website (if you have one).

On your invitation you’d simply write “Black Tie Requested” or “Black Tie Optional” depending on the path you choose.  I don’t think you have to go so far as to describe what “black tie” means…people know, or can google, or can ask you/your family/FILs.

I provided the definition on my website, but enclosure card sounds great.

@LuckyJuls:  I would be slightly miffed, but only because I go to mostly black tie weddings.  So if your guests aren’t used to that atmosphere, I doubt they’d be annoyed.  Are you having a wedding website?  Maybe the best option would be to describe the attire you’re looking for on there rather than on the invitation or in an enclosure card.

Do you care if gentlemen wear dark suits vs tuxes?  In your case it might be helpful to spell it out, since black tie typically means tux.  I could imagine people who rent tuxes being miffed that there are tons of people in dark suits and they wasted money on rental when a suit would’ve been fine.

I would be irritated to have “Black Tie” defined in an invitation (or enclosure).  Black Tie is a universally recognized level of formality.

I just put ‘black tie’ on the info insert card. Straight and to the point 🙂

I just put “Black Tie Invited” on the bottom of the invitation.  Everyone got it or looked it up online.  I don’t think a description is needed.
