If it’s truly black tie, you should be wearing a floor length gown.  Men should be wearing tuxedos, or at the very least, black suits.

Is it black tie or black tie optional? Our wedding was BT optional, and girls were wearing either long dresses or cocktail dresses. Honestly, unless it’s totally black tie, you can wear a shorter dress…but it should be really dressy. Guys should wear tuxes if they have one, otherwise a dark suit.

It’s a mixed bag now, but you don’t have to wear a gown.  A great dress with sequins or rhinestone flourishes would be fine with great hose and a sexy pump. It’s in the accessories that will make the dress look fabulous.  Jewelry, clutch, shoes and dangling earrings will make you stand out.   See below:

We’re having a black tie wedding (not bt optional, but black tie) and actually my mom is wearing a black gown that hits right below her knee. Its not floor length but its super duper fancy. At first I was like, is a short gown acceptable? Bt I think shorter gowns are acceptable now a days at black tie. Our good friend just got married at the Pierre in New York and there were lots of people there with super fancy shorter gowns on. So you should be fine with a short dress as long as its super fancy!

Im more traditional about men – I think they should be wearing a tux. But I know obviously some younger people wear black suits.
