try the magic bullet!  I really want a vitamix but they are upwards of $300 so I settled for a magin bullet.  Its perfect, you can make the smoothie and just take the container on the go!  I even assemble mine the night before and just pop it on the blender part in the morning.

I LOVE my magic bullet!!  My dad got it for me for xmas like 6 years ago and its still runs great and is amazing!! I love that its single serving and you can just pop it in the dishwasher ๐Ÿ™‚  I blend frozen fruit all the time, have even made frozen margaritas with it and it blends up ice well!!!

@Candace From BC:  Seems to me that since the first day that Blenders arrived on the scene (somewhere back in the 1970s or so) that Oster has been the leader in this technology.  I myself have an Oster, and it dates back to my first marriage (circa 1980) it is heavy duty (in terms of motor and power) but also sturdy in construction and has a variety of settings (they come in 8-14 speeds, and pulse as well as ON)… so that it can do a lot of jobs, including CRUSH ice…

You can find Osters at a variety of Canadian retailers, including Canadian Tire, Sears, etc.  And there are certainly models available under $ 100

Hope this helps,

I also love my magic bullet. I make iced coffee all the time, and it handles the ice just fine. And.. the best part.. it cost less than $40 at Wal-Mart.

Future Mother-In-Law has an Oster and swears by it!  One of my coworkers has a GNC single serving one that’s awesome, as well.

I’m surprised by all the ringing endorsements of the magic bullet. I had it and while it did the job, it was never very good at blending ice. I would always end up with huge chunks of ice in my smoothie. It also stopped working after about 6 months. I’d invest in an actual blender, personally. I don’t think the magic blender is a good option for smoothies.

@Krises:  Same here.

OP, Darling Husband and I sprung for the Vitamix because he uses it daily for smoothies/protien shakes and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s an investment, but it’s really second to none and it comes with a 10yr warranty. You might be able to get a cheaper one at Target, but you’ll burn through the motors quickly if you’re using ice/frozen stuff and putting it on a high setting every day. We got ours at Whole Foods when they had them on consignment so it was cheaper, but you can also find them on Amazon and Ebay for less than you otherwise would. Stay away from Williams Sonoma if you have one in your area…they were $100 more than any other price we saw.

I love my magic bullet, but my mom has the ninja and I am itching to play with that myself. From what I understand it shaves the ice pretty well. I would look into that as well. Darling Husband and I have smoothies about once a week and have never had any problems with chunks of ice. It just takes a few minutes to get it all blended well.

We have an Oster as well and love it. When my Darling Husband was shopping for a blender to get me all the ladies that he talked to highly recommended Oster.

I have a Ninja blender and I think it retails for around $100.  It has really wicked looking blades so you need to be careful when cleaning it, but it’s the most amazing blender I’ve ever seen!
