Do men still do ask a father for their daughters hand in marriage?
We are both getting married for the 2nd time and we are in our 40’s. We practically live together. He wants to ask my dad for my hand. I haven’t been my dad’s for years now. Feels hypocritical to me. Thoughts?

my husband didnt and i would have smacked him at the back of the head if he tried – he didnt ask for permission or blessings if he could have sex with me before we did the deed so i dont see the point of asking someone for their blessings/permission for him to propose marriage

My Darling Husband did talk to my parents (both of them) before he asked me. It wasn’t really permission, it was more to make sure they were on board!
So yes, people still do it. Although I think both me AND my dad would have given Darling Husband a funny look had he spoken solely to my dad for “my hand.” I’m not a possession.

People definitely still do it..most people I know, in fact. We definitely didn’t–I told him beforehand that I thought it was weird because I am not my father’s to give. He did attempt to call my parents the day he was proposing to let them know, but they didn’t answer their phones.

~Best addressed prob with some more encore brides!
My father is deceased, and yet I know my Darling Husband would have asked him. Not really “can I have her hand” but more of a “would you approve of” type of thing. He did fwiw, ask my grandfather.
I am so happy he did. My grandpa died in March of 2010. Two days after my birthday. I am so happy knowing he and my grandma gave us their blessings.
