@grapeslice:  my wedding is September 2nd. Where are you located? I contacted 4 hotels and they all gave me less expensive or equivalent rates and were willing to set up a block of however many rooms I wanted and give my guests shuttle. They need the rooms reserved by exactly one month prior to the wedding. I would speak to someone else and/or a manager.

I used the website findgroupdeals.com. They are a branch of priceline and let nearby hotels compete for you! You choose the rate and give them your contact info and  just watch the offers come pouring in! 🙂

I used hotelplanner.com to choose the hotel we blocked rooms at. The hotels bid on your business. And then, when the rate was higher than some guests could get with other discounts (AAA, AARP, etc.), they lowered the rate for our guests. 🙂

And, for the record, we did NOT have to pay a deposit, or a guarantee on the rooms (X% booked or we pay the balance, etc.).

Check out Hotel Planner. It’s how I found my block rates at a WAY less expensive rate than advertised. http://www.hotelplanner.com

As to the shuttle… I can understand them wanting to charge for it since it’s a specific destination only for certain guests. $50/hour seems really stepp though.

My experience has been pretty simple! I did some research and reached out to a hotel and they sent over a proposal. I have 20 rooms blocked off at a rate of $101.99 for 9/1/13. Regular price that weekend for what’s left is about $259. My guests are responsible for their rooms, so I did not have to deposit anything. In addition to the 20 rooms, I was given the option to rent their bridal suite at a $100 discount. Everything is signed and filed, so my guests will have until 8/1/2013 to book their rooms for the big day!

I also had relatively positive experiences with hotels.  Where in western NY?  I am getting married in Rochester.  Does your venue have recommendations?  I would ask the hotels why the rates are higher than normal and see what they say…?

I would totally ask.  They have to realize their other prices are out there, for you to compare to…
