- Wedding: August 2014
As I’ve mentioned before, my parents live about 400 miles away from me, and my mother has insited on buying my wedding dress. They came to visit me for the 4th of July. On Friday the 5th we had an intensive day of dress shopping. In the morning my mother and I went to the Wedding Shoppe Inc which is based in several houses. It was very busy in the bridal salon section, but I was banished across the street to the alterations building where they keep the plus sized dresses. I didn’t realize a street sized 12 was considered plus sized. It was quiet over there and fairly private except for the guy who kept barging in the back door with bathroom cleaning supplies and toilet paper. We tried on several dresses and realized that I looked pretty good in fitted silhouettes. Despite my mom originally being very anti-mermaid her favorite dress was a mermaid style. I really liked the top, but wasn’t so down with the taffeta skirt
In the afternoon we returned to David’s bridal. Last time I went to David’s bridal I really liked a dress with a lace illusion back, but was unable to truly try it on because they only had it in a size 6. This David’s Bridal had it in my size. Once I got it on I realized that it did nothing for my figure, so while I still love the lace pattern on the back, it’s not my dress.
My mother and I did not agree on favortie dresses at David’s Bridal. She really liked a v-neck Oleg Cassini because she liked the sand color.
In between trying these dresses on our consultant brought over a satin illusion back dress with a crumb catcher that they had just recieved an no one had tried on yet. It was not very flattering. Let me tell you the zippers on brand new dresses are a lot stronger than the other dress zippers. While struggling with the zipper my mom zipped my side into the dress which left a nice bruise and made me bleed a bit.
My favorite dress was a Melissa Sweet with streamers off the shoulder (I’ll admit I played with them like they were wings). This dress did things for my butt that I’ve never seen before. It also had an unusual lace pattern that I liked.
We went home to consider our options and I showed the pictures to my Fiance. He HATED the Allure dress. The eyelash lace just got him right in the OCD and he couldn’t focus on anything else. He thought the Melissa Sweet was alright.
On Saturday my Parents and I wandered around historic downtown Stillwater. Right on the main drag was a bridal botique with a beautiful window display. My mother and I had been lusting after the Pronovias 2014 precollection online, and there were 3 of the dresses in the window. We went in and asked if we could look around. It turned out that despite it being a Saturday they didn’t have any customers in the store. At first my mom loved the Pronovias and La Sposa, but then she found the Justin Alexander on the other side of the room. She and our awesome consultant picked 5 dresses for me to try on, several of which didn’t really fit because they were very fitted in the hips and I have large hips. I got super hot trying all those tight dresses on. None of them were really it, so I put my clothes back on and went out to where my mom was gushing over the Justin Alexander and his offshoot line Sincerity. Our consultant had a light bulb moment and found one more dress in my size that she thought I might like even though it was a different silhouette. I got undressed again and tried it on. This is my dress Sincerity 3201
I never ever thought I’d get a ballgown because I’m just not a poof person, but this dress has everything I was looking for. It comes with a flower on the waist that had fallen off the sample. I’m going to remove it and make it my hairpiece. I never would have found this dress without my awesome consultant Latona because there are not pictures of it online, there’s only a picture of the tea-length version.
After we bought the dress we got to chat with the owner of the store for a bit about my wedding. I had by far the best experience in her store of any of the salons I went to and would highly recommend Our Shop in Stillwater MN. They are putting in the order today, and my dress should be here by Christmas :).
