I was reading a thread on buying a dress before being engaged, where most Bees said they would never do that, it’s crazy, etc.
Well, call me crazy as well, but 1) my FH (I say this because despite the lack of “official” proposal, we have discussed it at length and among our families and have a ballpark timeline.) gave me the blessing to go look- actually encouraged me, and
2) The bridal shop in my town is having a BLOWOUT, 6-hours only sale where their stock is $25. Yes, you read that correctly but I’ll spell it out to confirm- Twenty-five dollars. A quarter of one hundred. I have been there when they have had a similar sale for bridesmaid gowns (all $10) and their selection was pretty eye-opening considering the price.
I figure, the worst thing that can happen if I find a dress dirt cheap is I wind up selling it or giving it to charity.
Heck, at that price, if it’s new and never worn, I could probably upsell for profit.
At any rate, it’s not a huge monetary risk for something relatively certain… so even if I decide I don’t like the style or whatever it’s not a huge loss… is it something to take advantage of, or am I merely trying to justify my crazy? idk, bad luck? unwise? thoughts?

I think in this case, it’s fine.

@Cory_loves_this_girl: Wellll idk about this. I’ve also talked with my BF in great length about marriage, our families know we think/talk about it and I’ve been googling dresses too (I just want to make an informed decision when the time comes lol!), but this could be bad luck. The prices are very good so at least it won’t be a waste….but I’ve heard urban legends of women buying their dress/booking a venue and then having it blow up in their faces. Be careful fellow bee. And good luck!!

@katyalubnieski: I’d say take elbow pads and a taser to fight your way through the throngs of other brides-to-be that will be swarming the place (akin to the place in NY that does the wearhouse sale). Still for $25 I’d say hell yeah! Even if you get one and end up not liking it you’re out less than the cost of a tank of gas and you could always re-sell it!

If your FH is fine with you going to look, I don’t see the issue. When will you ever find a deal like that again?? I say go for it.

@veryberry13: Yeah, but those things happen after proposals have already happened, too. If a relationship’s going to end, it will end no matter what you do or don’t do.

Girl, that’s pocket change. LOL. Go get your dress. I don’t have a ring yet, but the dress I liked went on clearance and FH told me he didn’t want me to miss out so he got it. It’s no biggie if he gives the blessing.

I’d go for it! I got my dress before I was “engaged” I got it a month before he asked me. He told me it was ok to go and look. I went with my mom and good friend and what is now my FMIL.
My FMIL actually bought my dress for me. 🙂
Good luck. I hope you get the dress you’ve always wanted.!

@katyalubnieski: I am in two minds about this. Firstly my bargain brain is saying.., “Who CARES if you aren’t engaged yet, you will be one day… $25 for a wedding dress is INSANE DO IT DO IT DO IT!”
Secondly, I want to make the point that I don’t think its bad luck to buy a wedding dress before you are engaged. I was in the mind that if I didn’t look I wouldn’t know. I browsed sites in secret lol a couple times before we were engaged but I wasn’t really serious about it!
However despite that, I cannot begin to describe the feeling going dress shopping gave me! I was with my mum or my mother in law or my girls. I was GETTING married!!!!!!!!!!! There was a date set!!! I was going to marry my soul mate. Buying and shopping for dresses gave me this “ah ha” moment where I was like “This is really happening” And even though you will get engaged, I think you will miss out on this amazing moment!
So do me a favour, go and look for a dress and if you find the dress of your dreams then for $25 buy it! But when you are actually engaged make sure you take your mum or your girls dressing for THEIR dresses. Because I think that will help you have that lovely ah ha moment I had!
I hope the above helps and doesn’t make you feel bad! Good luck!

Do it! A friend of mine bought 3 dresses before being engaged under similar circumstances. She didn’t end up wearing any of them, but she is working on selling them now– gorgeous dresses and at such crazy prices, easy to at least break even.

Wow, $25 I would by four and pick depending on what time of wedding you end up having.

Oh man! I say go for it!
At that price I’m tempted to ask you to pick out a dress for me and post it on over!
