Hi, My engagement ring came from Blue Nile. On their website they mention they provide free cleanings and inspections of the prongs every six months. The only catch is that you have to mail the ring back to them. It costs ~30 dollars to mail it back to Blue Nile, which I know is much cheaper than if I took it to the store (They are even going to replate it for free).
I am just a bit nervous about mailing it…has anyone done this? Had success?

Just in case anyone else is wondering about this later….I did send it back to Blue Nile. The USPS registered mail was very secure and cost 29 dollars including insurance. Blue Nile let us know when they received the ring, and sent it back within a week (free of charge).
They cleaned it, replated it and tightened all the prongs free of charge. It looks brand new!
They say you can do this every 6 months…I plan to do it at least once a year, it was awesome.

Thanks for this info – I didn’t realize they offered this service. Sounds like a good idea, especially coming up to the actual wedding day. I’ll try to remember in a few months!

Wow, that’s a great service!

Good info, thanks! I didn’t know they would replate white gold for free.

Next time, if you just want it cleaned and the prongs checked, any good, local jeweler would do that at no charge. The replating is a different story- it had to go back to Blue Nile for that, but I would ask a local jeweler how much they would charge.

I just did this and got my ring back within a week of them receiving my ring. What a great service! They completely buffed out the platinum and the ring is so sparkly!

Does anyone know if both the diamond AND the ring have to be from Blue Nile to qualify for the free cleaning? I purchased a diamond from Blue Nile, but not the ring. I’m totally willing to pay for my ring and diamond to be cleaned by a local jeweler, too – especially if it means I get it back in less than a week. How much does this typically cost?

After owning mine for two years, the band had gone slightly out-of-round and the diamond was very slightly loose (completely my fault). While I shipped it there, Blue Nile resized the ring, rounded the band and tightened the prongs free of charge and shipped the ring back at no charge. I am very pleased with their customer service.

Yes they provide a wonderful service. However keep in mind that the cost of sending the ring back depends on the value of the insurance. I insured my ring for 9000 and the shipping cost me about $59 it’s well worth it for piece of mind.
