wntrwhte:  The part about exclusivity isn’t true (at least not in all cases). BN may have some suppliers who have agreed to an exclusivity contract, but at least some suppliers have not done so. IDJ in NYC diamond district is able to get some diamonds listed on BN if you provide them with the GIA report number (I actually found the diamond in my e-ring on BN and had IDJ bring it in for us to view, then he ended up buying it from IDJ because they offered a better price; people on PS have done this too).

LOLgirl:  I think generally prices are similar between BN and JA – it’s just the buying experience that is different (specifically the fact that JA lets you view the diamond before purchasing, whereas BN is only able to provide pictures in some cases and is unable to provide the 360-degree view that JA provides, AFAIK).

wntrwhte:

i only look at 3ex stones with HCA scores that are lower than 2, with varying color/clarity combo

i was looking for either a H/SI1 or a I/VS2

i think it would be hard for JA to beat BN price, only becuase JA offers pics for viewing as well (which means added administrative/labor costs).

For the past 5 years, BN’s gross margin has been slightly declining from 20% to 18% as of LTM, so i highly doubt it they are making a higher profit – prob just because the prices the diamond have gone up.

Too bad JA is not publicly traded, so I have no info on their margins…

James Allen just seemed more personable to deal with and I like the fact that I can see what I’m buying instead of relying on specs alone. Spoke with a lot of them in customer service while debating what diamond to get and they helped me choose the best one within my budget. My girl is quite pleased.
