ellelw:  Well if saphire is good enough for Princess Di and Kate Middleton…Saphire is the second most common engagement ring stone.  It is almost as hard as diamond and makes a beautiful choice.  Saphires have been used for engagement rings since modern engagement rings have existed.  If that is not traditional….

It’s your ring, not his sisters – why does she get any kind of say in the ring you get? That makes zero sense to me.

Get what YOU want and what will make YOU happy. Diamonds have only been used in engagement rings since the 1940s as a result of an ad campaign – gemstones are the more traditional ring. Not that it should make any difference. Get a blue sapphire! It’s clearly what you want!

Please pick the stone you want and don’t listen to what anyone says. You will always long for a sapphire if you get a diamond and it will take the joy out of your engagement ring. I think she’s being kinda rude, ignorant, and judgmental so if I where you I wouldn’t listen to anything she says.

Your sister is a lunatic.  Maybe she should research the history of enagagement rings (using diamonds is a realatively NEW “trend”).  Also, sapphires are inherently more valuable and rare than diamonds, but can cost less because of the diamond industry’s efforts to create false scarcity.  Here is a good article about this: https://https://www.gemsociety.org/article/are-diamonds-really-rare/www.gemsociety.org/article/are-diamonds-really-rare/

And of course everyone else has already said this, but arguably the most famous engagement ring in the world (Princess Di/Kate’s) is a sapphire.  You should DEFINITELY go with your heart and get what you love.  I’m very annoyed on your behalf that someone in your life is being so ignorant and ridiculous to you!

ellelw:  Your ring, not his sister’s. Get the blue sapphire since that’s the one you love.

StarPower:  Ooh you’re killing me! I come super close o pulling the trigger on a london blue topaz solitaire from gemvara the other day, now seeing your pretties makes me really want to buy it! (I shouldn’t, I should ask Darling Husband for it for Christmas..but that’s so far away!)

ellelw:  I felt the need to reply again after you said that Future Sister-In-Law says the ring is for people around you. Um… WHAT THE EVER LOVING CRAZY TOWN VERBAL VOMIT DOES THAT MEAN?

Does her family have some weird Sisterhood of the Traveling Wedding Rings Club going down? Do you have Ring Fights where you compare appraisals and see who’s ring is the strongest? This isn’t Middle Earth, there’s not One Ring to rule them all.

Crack pot. Completely ignore her and don’t consult her any more on this decision.

Lesson one of engagement and wedding planning: sometimes you need to tell people to kindly put their comments in the comment box.

I love gemstone e-ring. Would take a sapphire over a diamond any day.

I’m glad you’re going to stick to your guns and go with what you like! I think sapphires are beautiful and you’ll be happy with your unique ring. For my first marriage I had a sapphire and diamond wedding band, which I absolutely loved. I never got tired of it and it fit my style perfectly. This time around I let my Fiance design my engagement ring. He knew how much I enjoyed having sapphires in my old ring, so he made sure to include some in my beautiful ring:
