Hi lovely bees,
I’m thinking of resetting my engagement ring with one of two stones but I love them both and can’t decide which one to use! One is a custom precision cut 0.8ct octagon VS clarity blue tourmaline. The other is a 0.5ct round minty green moissanite (currently set in another ring but some of the side stones have sadly fallen out – the setting was inexpensive, so I would be happy to reset in solid white gold).
i love the bright colour of the tourmaline and turquoise is my favourite colour but a little concerned about durability as it’s only 7- 7.5 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite is much harder at about 9 so it may be a more sensible choice and the the sparkle is really beautiful.
The setting will be a plain white gold band, 2mm wide.
I’m pretty indecisive at the moment and keep going back and forth, so would love to have your opinions on which you prefer and why. Thanks so much!
Sorry if not great quality but here are some pics below, showing the stones with my wedding band:

They are both beautiful! I’m 50\50 honestly, which I know isn’t helpful. I suppose I’d go with the moissy since its more durable maybe use the tourmaline for a RHR?

I love mint stones in rose gold. Sooo beautiful. I love light mint sapphires. There’s a Bee who has the EidelPrecious mint green oval sapphire in a rose gold setting (I can’t remember if it also has a halo) and it’s soooooo pretty.

Both stones are beautiful! I think you should set the blue tourmaline on the white gold band and maybe find a yellow gold setting for the mint moissy? I think that yellow gold (or even rose gold) would compliment that stone more than the white gold would

Crap they’re both beautiful π¬ I guess I lean toward the blue because it’s slightly prettier in color, but the moissanite because of durability. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either! Is that the natural color of moissanites or a colored variety (like the pink or blue or clear ones?)

I say go with the one you like more. I have an onyx (6.5-7 on the mohs) and after a little over a year it hasn’t taken any damage. And I’m not very gentle on my hands.

Wow, excuse me while I drool…
I think I’d go with the moissanite, but I agree with PP’s that would look divine in rose gold…oh my word just thinking about it makes me jealous
Anyway, back to drooling…

saukbee : I love both blue and green stones but I would pick mossinate for the durability. I had a pink tourmaline and within a month it was chipped from everyday wear as an engagement ring. But that’s just my personal experience with the stone.
Either one will be beautiful

saukbee : just out of interest….did you get the mossanite from aladdinscave on etsy? It’s very similar to one he sells π I eyeball it often π

saukbee : I voted for the moissanite but they are both soooooo beautiful. Maybe look for a setting for the tourmaline with a halo or something similar that will protect the stone more, then wear it as a RHR?

I would pick the green moissanite. It is very pretty and more durable than the tourmaline.

Wow, thanks everyone so much for your opinions and advice! It’s definitely helped me to think more clearly and come to a sensible decision.
I’ll try my best to reply to all your comments but at the moment I’m afraid I’m having some issues doing so via my phone!
I think I’m leaning more towards setting the moissanite for my engagement ring and using the tourmaline as a RHR someday in the near future (when I can afford it!). The moissy is also more subtle and I guess could be considered a more timeless look than the brighter coloured unusual cut tourmaline.
Love the idea of rose or yellow gold for the moissy, so I’m definitely going to do some research into that. Also think a halo for the tourmaline is a great idea to help protect the stone.
Thanks again bees! x

I vote both as a moi et toi ring! π
I think I would go with the moissy because the color is more subtle and the stone is more durable…
