I think it would be great! I would just talk to them individually and say “What would you think if I bought your guys’ bridesmaids dresses instead of doing a separate gift?” I’m sure they’ll love it – most Bridesmaid or Best Man gifts don’t get used again anyway.

Separate from that, I’d just let them know, “I’m planning on getting my hair and makeup done at XYZ Salon. You are welcome to do your hair and makeup on your own, or if you’d like me to make an appointment for you at the same salon, just let me know. The cost is $X for hair or $Y for hair and makeup.”

If you can afford to pay for the dresses, do it. If you feel like you can’t, don’t. $800 is a lot. You can get them a gift that is more within your budget.

As for hair and makeup, if you’re not asking them to get it done, you certainly don’t need to offer to pay.

@Marquise123:  Hey there, I’m trying to figure out the same…do I pay for their dresses or do I pay for hair/makeup?  I feel that if I tell them I want them to look polished on the big day, I should pay for it…I know they have no problem paying for their dresses (at least it hasn’t been intimated to me as yet), but asking them to pay for hair/makeup seems as if I’m asking too much.  I think I should pay for it, and I will, but man, my first quotes came in crazy expensive.  So, I’m looking for other salons that do in-room styling.  I am not requesting a specific hair style for my ladies (or makeup either), just a nice polished look.  If I do pay, I think that will be their gift, since I don’t think I’d be able to afford much more for them (I did buy them cute girly aprons already, so I will give them that).

@Marquise123:  Thanks for your comment!  Yes, I probably will do that as their gift.

Also, if you do pay for the dresses, I definitely do think you have a say in what they wear.  I, like you, want them to all wear the same dress (I’m a stickler for uniformity, lol).  I don’t really care as much about shoes (as long as there is some semblance of a heel), accessories, and hair/makeup (just a finished look).
