I’m in California and for mass quantities of:

– Beer: Costco! Yes, you have to commit to 24/box but some are assorted (e.g. Beers of Mexico) and some are by brand (e.g. Corona Light). They average out to be $1/beer in my experience. You do need someone with a Costco membership though.

– Wine: Depending on the quality you want, you can also look to Costco. They carry a lot of wines and the cheaper brand (e.g. Yellowtail) are usually the cheapest prices in the area. They often carry the giant bottles too. Otherwise, you can check out specials at BevMo! which can be a good deal when the Buy One get One for 5 Cents deal is going on.

– Liquor: Not sure about top shelf since we’re not doing a full bar, but Costco carries a lot of liquor as well. The only drawback (maybe) is that quantity tends to be large. There are also Costco branded (Kirkland) liquor which may work.

I would avoid specialty stores (e.g. Whole Foods) unless you specifically want a hard-to-find organic/gluten-free/locally sourced item. I would also avoid the grocery store (e.g. Ralphs, Vons) as they usually have a high markup and even when it’s on sale, it’s not much of a sale. Target sells some wine/beers cheaper than grocery stores and specialty stores as does Trader Joe’s.

I second the idea of Costco!

We always go to Trader Joes (for wine specifically) and Costco. Especially if you need to buy in bulk. Both places have competitive pricing on alchohol.

I would say napa for wine and champagne if you are planning to buy multiple cases.  Be sure to ask what is on sale.  You also get the bonus of being able to taste before you buy!

For wine and champagne I would go with BevMo!  We go all of our champagne on their 1 cent wine sale, so it was pretty much buy one get one free.  Trader Joe’s has some good cheap wine and champagne also (like $5 or less).
