Due to the CAD dollar being so low my Fiance and I won’t be able to afford to go on my dream honeymoon to bora bora / moorea. Which is fine! Our budget for our honeymoon is around 10k and we want something tropical, relaxing and beautiful. Where do you suggest?!

Greece? We must left santorini and had a great time. We got a cliff side suite in oia (upgraded to the honeymoon suite with private outdoor tub and sundeck) and it was aaaaamaazing!!

pinkshoes: where did you stay and how much if you don’t mind me asking? My only concern is safety in Greece with things going on in Syria as well as things going on with their economy. Did you feel safe?

NBee: we stayed at farani villas, I booked on hotels.com for $350 usd for a junior suite. I’m pretty sure the upgraded to the honeymoon sunset suite that’s listed for $500 though. The room was incredible, we watched the sunset from the balcony every night and people were packed behind us in the streets to watch. We’ve been here a week and feel totally safe everywhere we’ve been, especially on santorini. We’ve been to delphi, mycenae, and elefsina as well and is totally fine there too. Money hasn’t been am issue here at all, per usual smaller stores want to be paid in cash, but we’ve used credit cards too. I don’t think the issues with syria and isis extends too greece at all.

I’m biased but I always recommend Hawaii!

Have you thought about Florida? There are some really cute seaside towns like Sarasota, or you could stay in the Keys. There’s some interesting history, and the Gulf water is really warm.

MadameX: that’s a good idea! I’m trying to stay away from the states since our dollar is so ridiculously low. McDonald’s would cost 20-30.

Go here and click on the map and select your month and you can sort of get an idea of where you can fly for cheap and then you can look up a currency conversion. I would have done some searching, but I have no idea where in Canada you are! Kayak has a similar map also. If you click on dots that say “unknown” you can usually get a price, but it’s often better to do a more specific search. Once you have a better idea of where you want to go, use Kayak or ITA Matrix or Momondo for flights, and whenever you book a hotel, it’s almost always cheaper to go directly to their website and/or call them for a better price! Priceline is good if you can name your price, but their packages (also Orbitz, Expedia, Priceline, all of them…) basically won’t save you any money. Sometimes Groupon has some decent flight+hotel deals.
If you go to http://www.cheapcaribbean.com/ (again, depending on where you are in Canada), they have some good deals here sometimes (you might want to compare the hotel price+flight independently, just in case), and the Caribbean can be pretty nice.
The Caribbean and Mexico might be your best option, but I’d have to know what airport you’re coming from ^_^ Some places in Europe can be surprisingly cheap to fly to.

What about Fiji, or Rarotonga? Bora Bora/Moorea/Tahiti are probably the most exepensive islands in that region.
We live in New Zealand and just went to Rarotonga on our way back from a trip to the US. You can get direct flights through LA and prices there are in NZ dollars, which is fairly low at the moment (at least vs US). If you do go there I recommend the Muri area since it has a lagoon and you can swim/snorkel/stand-up paddle board in really calm waters.

Bali, Indonesia or Boracay, Philippines will give you those beautiful blue waters and tropical atmosphere you’re looking for, and they are on a much cheaper currency!

NBee: If you don’t already have one look into getting the SPG Amex, they have a pretty good sign up bonus, plus an additional referral bonus. If you & your Fiance both got one & are able to meet the spend requirement it could net you 61,000 points (total between the two of you) to spend on Starwood properties. Bora Bora might still be out of reach but I think you could get anywhere from 2-6 free nights in Fiji & Maldives, depending on what tier property you stay at. The points are transferable so if you decided to stay at a non-Starwood property then you can transfer the points into a frequent flyer account at a rate of 1.25 miles per point.
10k is still a nice budget even with the weak dollar. I’ve taken really nice seaside trips with a lousy exchange rate for less than 10k. But I like staying in private villas & apartments which are cheaper than staffed hotels, not everyone likes to self cater. Good luck!

NBee: A PP already mentioned this, but I can’t say enough good things about the Philippines. The people, the beaches, the food – its all gorgeous! We went on our honeymoon and cannot wait to go back. We did not go to Boracay because we wanted less of a touristy feel, but I highly recommend the El Nido area.
Although flights are expensive, once you get there it is very affordable. Our most expensive hotel was a beautiful all-inclusive for $350/night in an over-the-water bungalow. Beer is 1 USD. A nice dinner will cost less than $20 USD for 2 people. We rented a private driver for an entire day and it cost $40 USD.

NBee: What about the caribbean or mexico?
Places like Belize can make your dollar stretch.
Otherwise Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand or Indonesia. Your dollar will go further.
There is a company called luxury escapes that do great accommodation packages in Asia. You just have to add your airfare. Also if you are thinking Asia check out the Aust/NZ versions of groupon and livingsocial etc as they often have really good accommodation deals and your CAD will go a little further.
I feel you on the falling $$. I am in Australia and was planning a trip the USA to go snowboarding but since we are getting less than $0.70USD for our dollar that is off and we will be skiing in Japan instead.

I loved the Greek isles! I did a cruise there for my honeymoon but my husband and I always talk about going back to Santorini and staying in a suite like pinkshoes described. Such a gorgeous place!

Fiji! I originally looked at Bora Bora/Moorea but it was too expensive. I ended up honeymooning at the Remote Resort in Fiji and it was unreal! Gorgeous blue water, lush green hills everywhere, world class snorkeling, and food that was on par with LA or Toronto.
