I just majorly need to vent! i am a psychology intern getting paid a very meager salary to work full time. there are 2 other interns who are on internship with me as well. part of the pressure of being an intern is constantly wanting to “look good” in front of our supervisors. you know by showing interest, working hard etc.
There is this regional psychology banquet coming up. it costs $35 to go. our supervisor came to the interns when i was not around last friday to say if 1 or 2 of us want to volunteer at the banquet, then our costs will be covered. well today the the other 2 interns and myself decided that they would go and i would sit this one out. they had their reasons for wanting to go and i understood and was okay with not going.
so i went to our supervisor at the end of the day to tell her what we decided. her response “well you should still come!” meaning i will have to pay the full price, while the other 2 go for free! how is this fair?? i am completely willing and happy to go as a volunteer, but we were told they only need 1 or 2, not 3!!
i had lunch today for $2.39 because i am trying to save every dollar for my wedding. well more like i am just trying not to go further into debt so i can save my credit card for my wedding! and even though we get a RIDICULOUSLY low salary at our internship (i am talking less than minimum wage), our supervisor somehow expects us to go to all these expensive events. to top it off, some of us get our expenses covered, but not others! so now i am left with the option of sucking it up and paying the full price (while my fellow interns don’t pay a dime) or not going and looking the one who is uninterested!!
this just REALLY frustrated me because i was given the impression that if they were only paying for 2 people, then we were not all expected to attend. but apparently paying us so little does not stop them from expecting us to put whatever leftover money we have into work events! arrrrgh!!
