Boss says I'm not assertive, what should I do?

I’m sorry, that doesn’t sound like the best welcome back to your job.

I totally understand being caught off guard after hearing something like that also (especially after being spun around from manager to manager!).

If it were me, I would probably arrange time with this new boss to understand exactly why she feels like I’m not “assertive”.  I would probably ask a few clarifying questions and also ask for what I could do better.  I’d probably mostly ask questions without trying to explain too many things (this mostly comes from my own experience with my manager who specifically hates excuses)

 

I know that may be really obnoxious to have to do, but I think it would show initiative and an interest in improving.  Not that you don’t have either of those features.
