So, I have the dress, florist, photographer…. now onto to music! Have any of you have dj’s that you loved or a band? I think a band would be really cool, but I’m worried about it being cost prohibitive… Anyone have a Boston based Band, how much did it cost in the end?

@Sandle: We hired a band – although we didn’t hire one of the more well known Boston wedding bands. The more well known bands book really fast and well in advance! They range anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. So I would call that cost prohibitive!
BUT, I would suggest going to some of the band showcases that are held weekly by some of the booking agents. My suggestion would be to not make an appointment and not make it well known that you are there to book a wedding band. Just go and listen to the bands and find one you like – that is why Fiance and I did. Once the showcase is done, find a member of the band you like and ask for the leaders phone number and contact them directly. It is much more cost effective to deal directly with the band than through the agency. Just my suggestion.
Just be forewarned, you are getting married the day before me and we booked our band nearly 6 months ago… I’m afraid you may be too late to book a band. Sorry!

We booked a band it’s going to end being somewhere around $5-6k. But we’re also having one of the players play at the cocktail hour.
When talking to bands, ask if it would be less $$ to only have some of the members play. You don’t neccessarily need a full band or multiple vocalists. When I was looking, they generally gave me what their options were. For example: full 8-10 pieces or just 4-6, how many hours? cocktail hour?

So I was REALLY shocked by the prices of ceremony musicians… So I posted an ad in my price range on the Berklee School of Music gigs website. Even if you’re not open to students, you can request only alums and stuff. I got a ton of responses, most of which were in my price range. It worked out well, then trying to search for people who always ended up being 2x what I wanted to pay.

Hi! Have you found anyone? If so, who did you end up going with?

we are paying around 5,000 for our band from boston – 8 piece band, 2 members at ceremony & cocktail hour, then everyone in band at reception — Make sure you negotiate with them!! we got the ceremony and cocktail hour thrown in for free (my mom is amazing!)

I have a band and they are based out of Providence but do a lot of work around Boston. They are cost $2500 for 5 hours and an extra $300 for DJ (one of the band members is also a DJ). Total $2800. They are an Italian-American so they are also bilingual.

Wow!!! On all the prices you guys are paying. I went on gigmasters.com and checked off what I was looking for and people bid to do my wedding/ceremony.
I am paying $700 for 5 hours for a piano player for ceremony (1 hour) and then a sax and drummer are coming in with piano player for 4 hours for reception.
A friend suggested a wedding singer – that is what she used for her wedding. I think she paid @ $900.
