@Chrissy26:  That’s what I don’t understand. Why? Aren’t both brands designed by designers? What does “designer” even mean in your example?

@Barbiestylez:  Ooh, very nice! I bought my first (and so far only) Coach purse last year. It is a metallic silver leather duffle, and it is very pretty. I’d like to get one of their legacy pieces, but first I want to get a Kate Spade purse….that is the dream for me!

@stardustintheeyes:  I think I love you. I’m fairly new and I’ve never seen anything like this. Does it get this way frequently?  I’m just thrilled about Barby’s bags and I want her to be happy!

@MissMarple:  haha I’m not offended. I guess technically they are designer. I just picture designer as really expensive and harder to come by. When I say designer Im thinking luxury brands and since so many people have them I don’t really consider coach a luxury brand anymore. Granted to some people it would be considered luxury because its not something they can afford to have ten of…I guess it depends on the person.

When I think of designer bags I think of ones that are very expensive and not everyone has them. By definition I suppose those brands are still designer. 

so if looking at car brands I drive a brand new Kia SUV. It’s nice but not a luxury. I used to consider Lexis to be a luxury brand until every soccer mom I saw had one. Now I consider Audi, Bentley, Ashton Martin, Rolls Royce, and similar high end luxury brands. Granted Acura, Lexus, BMW are still luxury cars.

It’s always nice to get something special & personal, doesn’t matter if it’s designer or not, as long as you like it.  But it does give you an extra swing in your step when you finally have “that purse” – the one you’ve been looking at & trying to justify the cost. 

I’ve been fortunate that I’ve had designer handbags since my late teens – didn’t have many, but they are still classics.  I don’t really like to have what’s flashed around so much, guess I like to be a little different but not stand out.  My Fiance has taken over purchasing my purses (which is fine with me), he says it’s easier because he doesn’t have to remember a size & never needs to return them.  We’ve been together almost 6 years and I’ve received 8 purses, 1 wallet & 2 coin purses –  last birthday (a big one) he gave me a Channel & Hermes – love them all! 

@Barbiestylez:  Congratulations on your Investments!!!  I’m sure your sister & mother will be excited to receive such a nice gift.  Love the wallet too! You deserve it – wear them proudly!!!

@MissMarple:  designer connotes luxury brands. Not just LV, Chanel, Gucci, and Hermes, but also Celine, Chloe, Prada, Balenciaga, Fendi, Miu Miu, etc.

If you walk into a luxury boutique, Alexander Wang will NOT be next to Celine. I say this as someone that adores Alexander Wang accessories, and uses a Michael Kors wallet daily, and have a Coach crossbody for travel. I wasn’t being catty and I wasn’t raining of Barbie’a parade, but certain brands lack the luxury of designer branding. A lot of it has to so with the cache of the designer good (do they have factory stores? Do they have blowout sales? Are they in every suburban mall in America?). 

The fact that Coach and MK are churning out bags at record speed in China/Taiwan doesn’t help.  My favourite bag is my Marc by Marc Jacobs Hillier hobo. Made in China, great quality, mid-range brand. I have a Marc Jacobs bag that I’m very careful with because it doesn’t have the same high quality full grain leather as my MBMJ, but it’s a luxury product made in Italy. Some Longchamp bags can be as expensive as $1200, but they’re not Chanel and never will be.

I don’t know how to describe it beyond manufacturing, luxury cache, and history of the design house.
