@nineteen87:  Formal uniforms, i.e. those one would wear to a Black Tie event, normally incorporate a bow tie.  Not all ranks and branches have these uniforms.  They are one step up from a dress uniform.

@Groominator:  Four in hand ties are really a Creative Black Tie look, but not a very good one.  They really go a long way in reducing the Tuxedo toward a regular suit.

@Duncan:  Yes, I know this. There are women out there that, for whatever reason, really hate bow ties. It doesn’t help that it’s rare to see black tie done well nowadays.

For a tuxedo, 100% bow tie.

With suits, usually a tie, but if you’re going for a preppy or whimsical look, bow ties are cute too.

@asianbarbie:  i actually just did this– my DH was in a military formal uniform with a bow tie, so we decided to have all the groomsmen in bow ties with their tuxes. I loved it. my dad refused to wear a bowtie so we just got him a tie in the same pattern.  i thought it looked awesome and i heard no complaints from the groomsmen

Step #133 in becoming a real man:

Learn to tie a bow tie.  It’s not that hard.

@wisher558:  +1. I asked my Fiance if he wanted to wear a bowtie and was told he “didn’t want to look like a penguin.”  Oh well.

I love bowties, but I also love the tie and vest look with a lovely pocket square!

@MissGoldFish:  penguins don’t wear bowties! haha I was trying to get our ring bearer to wear one but he’s like I want a tie. I was hoping my dad would bring their dog with them so I could put a bowtie on him and my dad told me there’s no way in hell I was doing that. What is so wrong with bowties?! haha

@MissGoldFish:  Too bad. I would just follow that up with a Google image search of “james bond tuxedo” and ask, “but don’t you want to look like this?”

I like the bowtie look. It’s one of the few occasions where men can pull off the look (it’s not like a typical guy wears a bowtie to the office), and I think it’s so classic and formal looking. Very James Bond ๐Ÿ™‚
