We have mailerbox invites. I didn’t DIY them (ordered off of Etsy and the designer put them together) but they have a burlap insert. Here is a stock photo of the invitations we ordered..

The burlap lays in the box and the invites go on top, then the two sides of the burlap both fold on top of everything

One option is to use filler for baskets like crinkle cut. The invitation sits nicely on top of the filler and its lightweight so it wont add extra weight causing increased postage. Nashville Wraps has various colors and textures to match any wedding style.

I like the burlap idea, or some other fabric depending on your look and feel of the invites.

@msckmorris:  Sheer fabric that match your color scheme or tissue paper like the ones you place in gift bags.
