I just popped over to Snippet & Ink and I keep seeing articles about "budget weddings". One couple had a deli provide boxed lunches for their more casual afternoon fete.It was totally cute and worked with thier location and the formality of their reception.
Do you ladies think it’s possible to pull this off and not have it look "cheap" or "tacky"? I still want the wedding to be semi-formal (as in no jeans, etc.) But seeing as we are toying with the idea of having the reception at the huge, gorgeous barn on my aunt and uncle’s property, I thought it might be a cool spin on a "picnic" theme to have some local place provide boxed lunches for the catering.
Now I’m kind of envisioning people in flirty summer dresses and snappy summer-weight suits unwrapping paper-wrapped sandwiches *sigh*…

I think it is absolutely adorable given your location! It might be a little weird if you were having your reception at some super fancy mansion, but I think that a picnic theme would be perfect at a barn 🙂

I guess boxed lunches never sound tasty to me but maybe with upscale food like a baguette, some brie, some tasty sides it could be good… but it definitely wouldn’t be dressy.
What about a family style meal or a BBQ buffet? Also inexpensive but somehow more festive to my mind.

I think it sounds perfect! You should check out the Real Simple Weddings Guide that Real Simple magazine put out – it has a couple who had their meal be an actual picnic where everyone received boxed lunches and a blanket and spread out wherever they wanted to at the reception location. I wanted to do it myself, but there were too many logistical issues with our reception location, so we’re doing "upscale" picnic fare in this rustic reception hall and then providing blankets for anyone who wants to eat their dessert outside on the large yard on the property. I say go for it!

That is such a cute idea! I don’t know if you have a Corner Bakery near you, but they do amazing work with catering. They have wonderful sandwiches (think: chicken pesto with tomato and spinach on a baguette) and when you have a catered order, they paper wrap the sandwiches and have them in cute little brown box lunch boxes. So fun. This is definitely an idea to run with. Good luck!

I think it could be really cute. I’m sure you could dress up the boxes, maybe with a printed label or ribbon.
I have images of people picking up their boxes from a wagon and traipsing to the seating location in a procession with parasols. Have a little fun with the decor of the seating location whether it be picnic throws in your colours or tables and chairs. Anyway, I think it would be great fun decorating in a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Very cute idea! Maybe you could find boxes in your wedding colors to provide the deli with to dress things up a bit. You could also try to find a deli that does ‘gourmet’ sandwiches or that does their own take on the regular deli sandwich to make the boxed lunches a little more special.
