Did any of you buy (or receive as a gift at your wedding) a beautiful dinnerware set? What brand is it? Do you have any recommendations?
My Mother-In-Law is giving us $200 to put towards a dinnerware set for my next birthday. It doesn’t have to be super fancy-pants, but it would be nice to get a brand that we can invest in and not have to think about replacing (unless anything smashes, d’oh!).
So far I’ve thought about….
Gordon Ramsay (for Royal Doulton)
We just got given a cutlery set by Vera Wang for Wedgewood and I’m in love with it. I would love to have one of her dinnerware sets too, but yikes the price!! We probably don’t want to spend more than $500.00 in total for a full set (i.e. 12 or 16 pieces).
I love classic, clean white tableware, but I also like the rustic, earthen, slightly unsymmetrical look that has come into fashion of late, too. Definitely no florals!
Your thoughts? 🙂

Is this an every day use type dinner set you’re after or more of a special occasion use?

My favorite is Bernardaud, particularly Louvre or Naxos:
I also think they’re reasonably priced as far as fine china.
I’m in love with Michael Aram’s Palace, although it’s pricey:
I’m a huge fan of porcelain. Bone china creeps me out. It’s made with actual bone!

Also it sounds like you might be Australian. I am too. I’d suggest going with either of these, they are from myer so super easy to find, always on sale (as you can see at the moment) they are fine bone china so super nice to use, I refuse to drink from anything else now. You have the option with mugs or with tea cups AND if you break stuff you can buy individual pieces to replace them. We’ve got like 4 sets of them (2 of each) and they are so great. I personally like the mug version better though because the bowl is a better shape.

Got mine from Crate and Barrel and I absolutely adore my set.

Thank you for your recommendations, everyone!
I am close enough – New Zealand 🙂 it’s hard to get any big-name brands shipped here, and if you can, it costs the Earth. I wonder about shipping from Australia though – I may have to check that out. Thanks for the links!
I confess I really love Wedgewood, but that Michael Arams’s Palace collection looks gorgeous, too!!
Is bone china made from ACTUAL bone?! I did not know that!! Thanks for the tip! 😐
I am obsessed with Pottery Barn but I don’t know if they ship internationally?? 🙁 So many sites only ship within the US and Canada! So frustrating gahh!!

According to the FAQ on their American website, they do. They also have an Australian website.

So they do! Thanks very much – I must have been thinking of somewhere else!

You might really like Denby. They are beautiful, durable, and have that earthenware look without being too rustic or trendy. I just received 12 place settings of these: http://www.denbyusa.com/4-piece-sets/duets-taupe+blue/invt/due100tb&bklist=icat,4,,dinnerware,duets.
