I would definetly do the budget first. My partner did the whole “just be reasonable” well 6 months later after everything is booked its now, “we really can’t afford this”.

Save yourself the pressure. If I had my time again I would write down a full budget. Then start quoting full weddings to see what you can do. For example, Wedding 1: Beautiful princess wedding : Married in gorgeous forest, followed by 3 course dinner at a castle with every little thing you could imagine. Wedding 2: Backyard wedding with local hall hire, dj etc.

Once you do all that you will have a really good understanding of your what you can spend on your budget. Also ask your fiance whats really important, whats the big money ticket for the wedding. Ours was music, we wanted live music at the reception so that was our big ticket item.

Good luck

I’ve been reading your posts; and I’m so glad to read you & your mom are working to patch things up.

What about printing out one of those “Wedding to-do Lists” that are everywhere and sending it to your mother?  They usually have setting a budget as some of the very first steps & it might help to give her an idea that budget should be discussed before venue.
