I would really generally prefer that we:
1) get really aggressive with neutering/spaying dogs that aren’t meant to breed (less accidents)
2) regulate dog breeding a lot more aggressively (no puppy mills)
3) destroy the pet store supply chain for irresponsible impulse purchases (e.g. California’s new law that pet stores can only sell rescues)
4) increase focus on breed specific rescues
Though there will always be some dogs in need of rescue, instead of fighting over rescues vs breeders, I would like it if both sides take steps to significantly curb the supply of dogs in need of rescue, in part with fixes that could be legislated.
Yes, part of that is the demand for dogs bred, but shaming doesn’t and won’t fix that. At the end of the day people want pets and they want pets that they don’t want to worry will bite their children, and some people just aren’t going to take the risk on rescues.
But I would like to see those same people not purchase dogs from a pet store that got the dog from a puppy mill.
