Ask for a partial refund to cover alterations and get your alternations done from a local seamstress close to you. Pick up your dress and store it yourself, it’ll be fine in a garment bag in your closet at home.

I would call another bridal shop and see what they charge to steam the dress and see if you can get a partial refund on what you paid for the dress. I kept my dress at my house hanging in my closet until the wedding and had it steamed and pressed the day before my wedding at the resort for my Destination Wedding. The resort charged me $75 to steam it. I had no issues with keeping the dress in my closet for months and the dress even had to be put in an overhead compartment of a plane before the wedding.

I know this must be frustrating, but it may not be as much trouble as you’re imagining.

The same thing happened to me, though the shop had great customer service in my case. The owner of the bridal shop I purchased my dress from retired last summer and the closed down. They called me about two months before they closed though and let me know what was going on and offered a large discount on my dress – I think about $300 -400 or so since they wouldn’t be able the do the (free) in house alterations. I just had to pick up my dress from the shop and store it in it’s garment bag in our spare bedroom. I just took it last weekend to a friend’s mother who will be altering it for me. So in the end it worked out well for me.

I hope you can find either a local seamstress or are confident in the seamstress they provide. It sucks but unfortunately shops close down all the time, they want to make sure their brides are happy, even if they are closing. Don’t worry too much. It should all work itself out. The seamstress you do end up using should be able to steam it for you at your last fitting and make sure everything looks perfect.

I always wonder what would happen if the bridal store closes down before the dress actually arrives?
