We all receive gifts we don’t like or can’t use. We’ve all received a gift that makes us think “What the hell were they thinking?”. But I don’t see the point in getting all upset about it. Thank her and move on.

It does sound like she was intentionally trying to get a rise out of you, but you can’t prove that and you’ll never know for sure. The best thing you can do is give her the benefit of the doubt, and above all else mind your manners. Even if you knew fully well the gift was intended to hurt your feelings or anger you, an adult must carry grace.

I know it’s too late for a do-over, but if you come across a situation like this again, smile pleasantly and simply say “Thank you.”, don’t gush over it to keep up an act, it will be hard to keep a flaring temper in check when you’re speaking.

For the record, I’ve received plenty of gifts of this nature. Sometimes a whole lot of nothing would be preferred.

In my personal experience, people who buy fakes of designer goods generally tend to do the same for themselves. Not that it matters, but I doubt her own bags are real.

Off topic! Anyways, just throw them out or donate. Don’t re-gift that crap 🙂

Of course, you could always buy her a “designer” bag next Christmas!

I get where you are coming from (OP). Yes, it’s definitely a first world problem but so are most of the issues discussed here. Where else can we complain that our ivory veil doesn’t match out “diamond white” dress?

If she does, indeed, wear the real thing and knows you’re into fashion, it’s rude of her to make a big fuss and pretend she custom designed real designer bags, while in reality giving you pleather knock offs. I would definitely be annoyed in this situation, especially when it’s just petty and puts a bad taste in your mouth during your shower. If she didn’t know or wasn’t trying to taut them as real that would be one thing, but it seems she knew better.

However, when weddings come around there is always family drama, and more “interesting” sides of family members come out. It stinks that there’s nothing you can really do except donate the bags to charity and not bring any more attention to the matter. The good news is, if this is the worst thing that goes wrong with the pre-wedding process, you’re doing pretty well 🙂
