Hi Bees – After your bridal shower, what did you all do with your gifts? I am torn on what we should do since I have heard you are not supposed to use the gifts until after the wedding. My living room is filled with gifts and I don’t know what to do with them. I wanted to start putting them away so we have our living room back but I don’t want to not do the proper thing. It’s bad enough we have rooms filled with wedding crap already so this is now just another room dedicated currently for holding gifts. What did you all do? Did you use your gifts right away or did you wait until after the wedding? Why/why not?

FutureWifey2016: For my first wedding, I waited to use them until after the wedding. We were not living together and I thought it would be nice to have all the new things in our new place.
i did not have a shower for my second wedding.

FutureWifey2016: I used mine right away for this reason – or else we would have boxes everywhere, and to be honest, we had enough wedding stuff everywhere leading up to our wedding! I’m sure my family & friends would have wanted us to use and enjoy their presents and not wait until after the wedding.

soontobemrsKB92615: This is our exact problem. Besides having all the wedding stuff every where and now the gifts but we are also renovation our house so we have that mess too (it’s never ending)

We didn’t have this problem, but a close friend did. They got a storage unit for the gifts and waited until after the wedding. Maybe a little crazy, but saved them the space in their home.

The reason people say not to use them until after the wedding is that etiquette dictates that you return gifts in the event that the wedding does not occur. I think some people wait due to superstition also. Since we were 100% positive that the wedding was going to happen and we aren’t superstitious, we went ahead and used ours.

I would probably use them or at least open them and make sure they work or are not damaged. If you wait it might be too late to return, if there is anything wrong.

I used ours. Most of the stuff we needed and didn’t see the point of them sitting around for 2 months.

I am not against using the gifts, but I don’t really have time right now to clean out everything and replace with the new stuff. I am planning to reorganize after the wedding when I have more time.
Right now everything is stacked in the basement.

FutureWifey2016: We used them because I couldn’t store them. Well- a few things stayed in the boxes but things like plates and stuff got taken out and used. We were living together. I suppose if we were moving into a new place together after the wedding I might have saved everything.

I think if we weren’t living together, I might try to wait, but honestly, as you’ve pointed out, we need the space. My shower was only about three weeks before our wedding, and I really didn’t see that it mattered.

Never heard of not using shower gifts before the wedding.
I even used some shower gifts before my shower (people had them shipped to my house before the shower since my shower was far from where I live). LOL.
