So a generous friend of my Mom’s has offered to throw me a bridal shower the week before my wedding. She wants to know if I prefer a personal shower, or a household shower….being a totally clueless bride, I’m not really sure what each of those entails. Any help out there? What I guess I’m a little confused about the concept of a shower in general – do people typically get you a gift for the shower, AND the wedding? Or do they just give you your wedding gift AT your shower?

A household shower is what it sounds like where you are given mainly household items from your registry. A personal shower is basically a lingerie shower.
It depends on the social circle but in most cases, if someone gives you a shower gift, they don’t get you a seperate wedding gift. Some people do buy both though but they are in the minority. Especially in the current economy, many people do good to afford one gift.

I think that perhaps whether or not people get you a shower gift and a separate wedding gift may be a regional thing? Where I’m from you Always give a wedding gift in addition to a shower gift (if you’re invited to the wedding) and it is certainly not a wealthy area. I would say typically a shower gift is smaller or less costly than the wedding gift.

I would say in most cases, if a person is invited to a shower and the wedding, they expect to buy a gift for both. As far as I know that is what ettiquette dictates. The shower gift is usually smaller than the wedding gift
