@sweetpeony: I did one. I don’t see why the bride shouldn’t make a speech, particularly as she has usually put a heck of a lot of time and money into planning the wedding.

I don’t see a problem with that, maybe you can start a new trend? Why is it only the groom anyways?

I am definitely making a speech – I love public speaking and have some things I’d like to say. It will be a “joint” speech between Fiance and I, so I’ll probably do an intro, have him say a few thank yous, and then I’ll take over with the bulk of what I like to say. I just really enjoy public speaking, Fiance doesn’t as much, and I want to do it, so I’m going to.

I’ve never been to a wedding where only the groom made a speech – either they both did or neither did.

If you got something to say, say it honey!  That’s your night!

My Fiance does not want to make a speech at all, so I’ll probably say something. 🙂

…just avoid getting up there and having a power cry moment where you push through the tears with hiccups and snorts and then break into a paltry rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings…I had to sit through that one time…not enough beer in the world to make that palatable

@Nona99:  That sounds so horrible it’s hilarious (as long as you don’t have to sit through it).

I basically stood up and said, “Well, anyone who knows me knows that I always have to have the last word…” and then thanked everyone who Darling Husband forgot to mention because he was too nervous.

I’ve never been to a wedding (including my own, lol) where the bride did not give a speech, at very least to thank her family and bridal party.

I say go for it!

Darling Husband and I made a joint speech and I would expect a joint speech from the bride and groom at a wedding.  Unless one or the other is very very shy I would find it strange for only the bride or the groom to speak while the other stays silent.

We gave a very brief speech to thank our parents and everyone who came.  Just keep it short and sweet.

I often see the bride (and groom) making a thank you speech.

@SpecialSundae:  IT WAS SO AWFUL!! I’ve never been more embarassed for someone in my whole life…the entire reception hall was staring at their plates trying to spare this poor girl, who had indulged in a little too much bubbly as she poured her heart out flatly into the microphone…our table had decided that if she got to the second verse, we were just going to get up, start a conga line and wisk her away to the bathroom for a face full of water and some fortifying coffee…luckily her husband stopped it before she could get too carried away with the arm styling and light herself on fire or knock out a guest….shudder….to this day I can’t look her in the eye
