Wanted to share some good news: I just saw on the Brides Against Breast Cancer website that they have scheduled an event in Milwaukee for the weekend of Jan. 25-26, 2013. I am really excited about this because I got my beauty at a BABC event (up in the Twin Cities), and I want to let all of you know what a cool program they have, and what a great opportunity this is to look for a beautiful and affordable gown.
BABC gets donations of pre-worn gowns from individuals, as well as brand-new gowns from designers & bridal shops. They price them at a discount (generally 25%-75% off retail) and sell them as a fund raiser, with the money going to support breast cancer patients.
The events typically take place in hotel ballrooms. They have the gowns set up in one area, arranged by size (to the best of their ability, given the wonkiness of bridal sizing in the first place, plus the fact that many of the pre-owned gowns may have been altered) and then they have another room set up with changing cubicles. The event is staffed by volunteers, and they assign someone to help you look through the racks and pull dresses to try on. Everything is tagged so that prices, designers, etc., are clearly visible. They also have seamstresses back in the changing areas to help give you advice about fit, alterations, etc.
For brides who don’t have their heart set on one specific gown and who are open to trying a bunch of different styles, it’s a great opportunity. You also get to try on the exact dress that you may be taking home that day, not a sample that you will then have to order and wait for. I had a wonderful experience buying my gown from them, and I just wanted to let other WI brides know that they should check it out in January!
