Hi friends, I’m starting to think about bridesmaid dresses for my three bridesmaids. I am looking at dress that cost $200 and less since they will be paying for their own dresses. Do you think this is a fair number? Bear in mind that they don’t need to travel (the venue is 30 minutes away from where they all live) and they probably won’t have to pay for the bridal shower (my mom feels guilty making 20-somethings do that). I don’t want to make them spend an exorbitant amount, but it is a formal wedding and I’d like them in long dresses.

What about shoes, earrings, necklaces, ect?
Are you providing those, or will they need to purchase those as well?
If they ONLY need the dress, I don’t think it will be a big deal.
Also, where are you planning you get your bm dresses from? Davids bridal has some super pretty dresses starting at $78.

Depends on the demographic of your BM I suppose. It’s probably something that you should discuss with them.
My BMs were all pretty young and working/students. Keeping that in mind, I tried to keep our dresses somewhere around $100.

@jenilynevette: I figured I would just have them all wear silver shoes that they already own and get them jewelry as bridesmaids gifts

I think that’s a perfect amount. Nothing more. I let them wear whatever shoes they wanted as long as they were silver and I let them wear their own jewelry.

@DuckEBee: Have you considered renting dresses? littleborroweddress.com and renttherunway both have pretty dresses. Little borrowed dress is especially nice because they have the same colors in the dresses, so your maids could pick which style they like best (if you’re open to them wearing different styles.) They also send you a free second size, so they have have a backup if the size they order doesnt fit. LBD dresses also have built in adjuster things, so they can get the perfect fit.
I know I probably sound like an endorser or something right now. XD

@DuckEBee: $200 is very reasonable IMO. Every wedding I’ve been in the dress cost $220+..Then I paid alterations, shoes, hair & travel on top of that. I did my own make up.
travel was $1200 at one wedding, $1900 at the other. But they were destination and the best weddings I’ve ever been too.
For the first wedding the gift was earrings & a necklace. I’ve never worn them after the wedding. The other was a coach clutch, which I’ve used multiple times and loove it!
For my own wedding, the bm dresses I chose are $275 on etsy, but they are custom, so they will not need to pay for alterations. I will pay for shipping..They will pay for their own travel/accomodations ($1900/person).. they can pay for their hair.. make up is only if they want it done…I wan’t matching shoes so I plan on buying some nice cheap flip flops for all of them.. and I havn’t decided on the gift yet but I plan for it to be awesome 🙂

@allyfally: That’s a great idea! I’d be really worried though about length as they are all on the shorter side (MOH is under 5 feet). I wouldn’t want to be sweating that out two weeks before the wedding. Good tip, though!

@DuckEBee: Oh, yeah, probably wouldnt work for the shorter girls.

That sounds pretty fair to me. It is similar to a tux rental. The dress I picked was 220, but since I bought my dress there and they decided to forward me a holiday sale since I was out of town they got it for 180. Definitely ask- most salons are willing to give you a discount for a sale.
