You are the bride, it should be your final decision. However, if they don’t like the one you pick I’d ask them to find a different one. Give them something simple they can change about it — the neckline or the length?

Kind of, since you gave them guidelines, and didn’t say that it shouldn’t be a cocktail dress. You of course can veto anything you want, it’s your wedding – but is it worth it? What does the dress look like? Is your wedding formal? I’m not sure what you mean by it looks like a cocktail dress – is it just not floor length?

Can you show us a picture – that may help decide.

If you absolutely don’t want them to wear the dress, then find ANOTHER dress.  Even if you think they look great in the dress you picked, if they don’t feel comfortable in it, I wouldn’t make them wear it.

Could you post a pic of the dress? What is revealing about it? If it is too short, could you maybe pair it with opaque tights? Or if it is too sparse up top maybe agree on a bolero or shawl for the ceremony?

I would like to see a picture of the dress they chose before I can really answer, but just in general I think it would rub me the wrong way as a Bridesmaid or Best Man if the bride told us to pick any dress as long as it fit the color/length and then she vetoed it because she did not like it.

Also they may have chosen a more cocktail-type dress because the majority of bridesmaid’s dresses are expensive and unwearable after the day.

If you seriously hate the dress I would let them know. However, during the next round of dress picking I would let them know exactly what you are hoping to find. If you want them to wear a specific type of dress you are better off picking one for them. It’s not fair to give them free reign, then take their options away!

@kris91011: of course they are more concerned with how they are going to look than the overall feel of the wedding- it isnt their wedding, and unfortunately, when you said they could pick their own dresses, u gave them free reign.  however, if they look like royal slutbags, you have some leeway.  let us be the second opinion =)

I’d like to see a pic of the dress that you say isnt appropirate. Ultimately its your wedding, if they are your friends they should understand that it should be your vision. My BMs have to wear the dress I chose for them. I would do the same for them too.

@kris91011: I think that this is not a battle I would choose to fight. Based on the two dresses that I saw from google images they look nearly identical. The only people that will look bad if they have too much cleavage are the girls with too much cleavage.

If you are concerned about it for the ceremony maybe you can gift all of the bridesmaids a matching bolero or a shawl to be removed for the reception.

I can see what the girls are saying the dress you chose is more “bridesmaid” and they are less likely to wear it again whereas the other dress is cute and they could wear it to multiple events. Once the bridesmaids have the dresses that fit them properly in the bust it shouldn’t be so inappropriate. You have final veto so if you really hate it then you can make them choose your dress but I think they would relaly appreciate you letting them get the dress they want.
