I think formal/black tie dictates long dresses

That being said, I’ve seen it before. and they were some niiiiiice cocktail dresses. You could spruce them up with vintage sparkly pins. Nice updos go a long way too

But if you expect all your guests to wear long dresses and tuxes (true black tie? or "black tie" so nobody wears jeans??) your ladies probably should be too, because they shoudl be dressier than most guests in my opinion

I think that the only appropriate short dresses for black tie need to be satin or silk, very formal shoes, updoes, etc.  Personally, I think short or tea length dresses are more appropriate for outdoor ceremonies and more casual weddings..

Depends – I’ve seen some really formal cocktail dresses (like pvaulter718 said satin/silk, with deeper colors and a formal fit).  If it’s a "fancy" cocktail dress at knee length, perhaps, that could work.  I might stay away from the tea-length dresses in more casual fabrics and cuts.

Good luck!
