There’s a lot to consider when you pick dress length. What time of year, what time of day, what type of venue, etc.

I think long bridesmaid dresses would complement your wedding gown the best.

A long chiffon gown might be a good compromise. They can look more formal, but still be comfortable.

I’ve always considered the shorter bridesmaids dresses more informal. I think it depends on the feel you’re going for for the wedding. If it’ll be a fairly informal event, than go for the short dresses. If you want it to be more formal, I suggest long dresses.

If you’re going to make your girls go outside for pictures, a short dress might be best – you don’t want to end up with sweaty bridesmaids lol!

I have to agree with Rhopalocera:  a long chiffon dress would be a great match for your dress and will address the comfort factor as well since they’re light and flowy.

I agree with long chiffon dresses! Your dress is kind of a similar style to mine, and I personally think short dresses with it will look a bit too casual. I’ve opted to go for long flowy chiffon dresses for my bridesmaids, which look great but will also be loose enough that they’re comfortable moving, dancing, and eating as much buffet dessert as they want! ๐Ÿ˜€

I prefer long long dresses, regardless of season.  Light fabrics like chiffon and tulle are my favorites.

I think long dresses make the wedding feel more formal

If I were a bridesmaid,  I’d rather wear a long dress. I feel like you can wear a short dress anytime,  but not a long one…well a more formal one anyways.  Obviously there are maxi dresses. But yea, long bridesmaid dresses make things more formal.

As a short round gal, if I were a bridesmaid I’d worry that a long dress would make me look like a small refrigerator.  ๐Ÿ™

belleindigo:  4 of mine are in long dresses as that’s what they wanted, and my Maid/Matron of Honor is in a totally different dress (short body-con) as she doesn’t suit the same things as the others.

I have to say I do think long dresses are a bit nicer: I just think they’re more formal and lend themselves to the occasion more (depending of course on the type of wedding).

Personally, I like short for a summer wedding.  I found most long dresses to either look wintery or too beachy.  They are cheaper, and bridesmaids almost always prefer them.  Besides being cheaper and more comfortable, they are usually more universally flattering, and there is also a chance that they would be able to wear a short dress again… for a long dress not so much.  There are definitely really formal short gowns out there too (my sister jokes about wearing her short bm gown for my wedding to  high tea with the queen), and likewise long gowns that are casual.  I would just have some of your girls try both long and short gowns for you so you can see what you like best on them.  I was pretty sure I wanted long gowns, but had them try on both and I really didn’t like the look of long dresses on them.

I used to be firmly in the short camp..but then I tried on my long Bridesmaid or Best Man dress for my best friend’s wedding (I have the long version of the Alexia 148S, which is oddly not on their site – the short one is here : http://www.alexiadesigns.com/Bridesmaids/Alexia-Designs/Short–Style-148S/, which is in July, emerald green, and chiffon) and it is SO lovely. Definitely sold me on long dresses. Plus I have really chunky legs and the long dress hides all that so I don’t need to go nearly as nuts at the gym ๐Ÿ˜‰ bonus!
