i want a blue gown, plain and simple. (literally, plain and simple…embellisment only in the drape of the fabric, no lace or bling.) fitted through the hips, sweetheart neckline, sweep train, ruching or pleating through the bust and waist. i can’t find a blue gown i can afford for the life of me. and even if i COULD afford them, generally, other than being blue, they’re not what i’m looking for. so i started looking at bridesmaid gowns instead, even tried a few on at the macy’s salon in minneapolis. (i went there looking for a specific watters gown that the watters website claimed they had and really they didn’t, but found a very nice bill levkoff instead. *sigh* decisions, decisions.)
has anyone done this? or, worn any sort of non-bridal gown to get married in, at an otherwise “normal” wedding (e.g., not destination or courthouse, etc). relate your experiences please, i’d love to hear them!

As long as you love the dress you pick that’s all that matters. If you want a blue dress that badly you might not be happy in a white one and that would probably reflect in your photos. Do what you have to in order to feel your most beautiful on your big day!

You should do what would make you happy. Weddings aren’t about sticking to tradition and following rules and etiquette… it’s about you, your partner to be and celebrating your special day the way YOU want to celebrate it and in whatever attire you want to celebrate it in.
I say go for it!

I think you should go for the blue gown. And think of all the options you will have now looking at bridesmaid dresses! There are so many beautiful bridesmaid dresses out there, when I went shopping with my bridesmaids, I was thinking maybe I need one of these dresses too… lol. Good luck and please post pics of the dress you find!

i’ll definitely do what’s right for the look i’m going for (and my bank account, lol), but it’s still nice to hear about other people who have done it.

Well, if you’re saying *I*, well, no, *I* would never wear anything other than something that looked distinctly like a bridal gown.
But for YOU? Especially since you don’t want something white? Absolutely go for it! 🙂

I know a friend of mine is doing a taupe gown that is a knock off of one of Angelina Jolie’s dresses. I’m all for wearing what makes you happy.

My wedding dress is a Bridesmaid or Best Man dress! Dessy 2810. I tried on tons of wedding dresses and I really kept going back to the that one, so I bought it!

I have not selected a dress yet…but I have considered these 2 Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses (made in white)…if it works for you and your style…I say go for it!

I originally wanted a pink gown, so I was totally going to go this route…I say got for it! You’ll get exactly what you want, and the price will definitely be right. My one word of warning is to be prepared for some snootiniess at the bridal shops if you admit you’re looking for a Bridesmaid or Best Man gown as a wedding gown. They’ll assume it’s because of budget, not personal taste, and the service probably won’t be as good.

I voted other. I personally wanted a large ballgown, which they don’t really make in Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses. However, I think it’s a fantastic idea, and some of those dresses are so gorgeous!
