I was going to have my BMs choose their dress (just plain black, knee-length) and I went with my sister/MOH to try on dresses, we realized HOW DIFFERENT they could end up…. and after I bought my dress, we decided we wanted more dressy-type Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, so I just picked one. All the girls are VERY excited about the dress (atleast they say they are), and I couldn’t be happier. I picked one with similar fabric and details (silk taffeta, rouched at the waistline) and it will be flattering for everyone! Best of luck!! 🙂

I had my Bridesmaid or Best Man choose a black dress they liked from JCrew and I think it turned out great. I didn’t want them to be too "matchy-matchy", so I thought this would be easy.  They all chose different dresses, but I think they were all happy and comfortable with their selections.  Plus, I got so sick of making decisions for the wedding, so I was glad to delegate this to someone else!

I had my ladies choose anything in grey… of 7, 3 wore the same dress from Macy’s, 2 had J Crew, one was Ann Taylor, and one was from Target (For $25!). They all had wraps from Nimli in our ‘accent’ colors to pull it together… [attachment=217203,21427]

I originally was going to do this but many of the dresses my girls liked, but they said they’d never wear them again. Then I started to think about doing the Victoria’s Secret convertible dress because they can each style it in a way that flatter’s their body and they’ll get to wear it again! I’m pretty sure this is the way I’m going to go, but we’re ordering early, trying them out and if they don’t work we’re going to go with traditional Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses. There is a similar dress by Two Birds that is more $$, but I think I like the way the VS dress hangs. We’ll see how it works out, I’m hoping that it’ll be easy and they will love them.

I had my ladies choose the black cocktail dress of their dreams and it came out so well!

I gave the guidelines of:

1)knee/tea length

2) a-line-ish (just not tight anf form fitting)

3) you must and it and wear it again

I agree with iff going with a color to choose one store (a la David’s or J Crew), but I am all about this idea! I felt like my maids’ individual personalities showed through and I had less bridal guilt knowing they basically chose how much to spend.

I’m not planning on doing this, though I have seen it done. In my personal opinion it’s way to distracting from the bride. I always wind up trying to take in the differneces in the girls dresses then focusing on the beauty of the brides dress. Remember you want them to look good, but in the end it’s YOUR day, not theirs. You are the most imporatant woman up there.

I have mixed feelings about this. Ive seen it look really nice at wedding, and Ive also seen it look to chaotic and distracting for me. I think it just really depends how its done. Also I think it usually works for weddings that are a little less formal. My girls arent going to wear different colors, but maybe different styles in the same color and length.

I did this.  We got our dresses from Aria and I just gave them the color and they picked the style.  They each got something they loved and it added interest to the overall look.

I’m letting my girls do this.  The guidelines are short, aqua, you have to love it, and I have to love it.

So far only 2 of the 5 have chosen, but here are they are:
