So I have posted a few times about my caterer woes, but here is the deal. Over a year ago my mom, Fiance, and I went to the caterer and she gave us some ideas. Since she did a lot of business with my dad’s company and where my mom works, my mom wrote the deposit to her right then. I wasn’t thrilled, but it made my mom happy. Fast foward to eight weeks ago. The Fiance and I sit down and plan out the meal. This is what we decided:
Selection of meat: Rib eye, Chicken skewers, and LambSide: Macaroni w/ Cheese, Vegetable Medely, Scallops, Dinner rolls, and Grilled AspargusSalad: Tossed w/ gross dressing (she wouldn’t budge and said either this or no salad at all…)Apps: Cowboy Caviar, Baked Brie, Chips and DipDrinks: Lemonade and Coffee
I asked her how much she though it would be for all of that and she said “Oh, this looks like around $25-$30 a head, but probably closer to $30.” Ouch, but for the amount of food and selection I let it slide. After five weeks of no official quote I start calling her until she finally told me to quit pestering her. The next day I got the quote and it was for $48 a plate, NO discount for kids. W…T…F?! I’m on a tight budget, so that was just absolutely ridiculous to me. I called and said there was no way and to bring it down to $30 a head. Here is what she sent me back:
Meat: ChickenSide: Vegetable Medely, Mac and cheeseSalad: Tossed
….and NOTHING ELSE! I was absolutely livid as well as my parents. Luckily my BIL’s brother (my Brother-In-Law too?) is the kitchen chef at a resteraunt I love. They are breaking into catering and said they would cater the event for $22 a head ($10 for kids) and we get this:
Meat: Chicken (BBQ and Grilled) and cut-to-order Prime RibSide: Macroni w/ cheese, asparagus, pasta salad, potatoe salad, biscuits, and dinner rollsSalad: Mixed green w/ choice of ranch, blue cheese, ceasar, or vinegaretteApps: Cowboy Caviar and Bacon Wrapped Chicken
Sweet! So Momzilla prompty fired the first caterer and also cancelled her contracts for the rest of the year for both her events and all the events with my dad’s company. Needless to say she lost $30k in events this year.
Now the bar service who was recommended by the caterer….for $1600 we were getting a keg, table wine, champagne…and free soda ONLY for the kids. Since the caterer was providing lemonade and coffee, that was fine. Well now that the caterer isn’t involved he refused to let us bring in our own lemonade and coffee. So I asked how much it would be for free soda for all the guests and he said an extra $10 a head…so around $2600 for his bar service. Note…this ISN’T AN OPEN BAR!! Just soda, a keg, wine, and champagne…everything else is cash only.
My MOM got ticked off with that one, fired him on the spot, and we got a different company. $400 and they provide the keg and setup. They don’t want to deal with wine, champagne, soda, or anything like that so we get to provide it. YAY! Now my bar will be around $900 and we will provide soda, water, lemonade, iced tea, coffee, beer, wine, champagne, and an open tab for the wedding party. Mixed drinks are $4, premium mixed drinks are $5. We actually don’t really want people drinking hard liquor (too many alcoholics in the bunch) so hopefully paying for those deters them.
We also fired the nail salon doing the mani/pedis for the wedding party since they were charging $65 per mani/pedi ($130 per girl) and went with a company that charges $35 per mani/pedi ($70 per girl), but still does a FABULOUS job (We tested them out one weekend). Oh and we fired the linen rental company because after we got rid of the caterer, so refused to give us our original quote (apparently she gave us a discount ONLY if we used the first caterer). I bought my linens online and am making the center table linens for cheaper anyway.
Soo…to fire all those vendors cost me $500 in deposits….but I save around $2500 and I am now 120% happier/more excited for the wedding. YAY FOR TEAM ZILLA!
