Cute! My hair has been every color of the rainbow. You’ll need to wash in COLD water when you wash your hair. Not warm, cold. Warm/hot water will cause your color to fade quicker. You’ll also need special shampoo and conditioner (go for sulfate free). If you do multiple colors I try to shampoo and rinse each color in sections otherwise they bleed into one another. Especially if you’re a blonde, the color will tint your blonde. You’ll also need to color more frequently.

Its a lot of work if you want to keep it looking fresh, so be prepared. You’re never too old and if you don’t like it you can change it.

No one is too old for fun hair!!

How often do you currently wash your hair? I’ve had similar colours that I can get to last for a month, but I only wash my hair once a week. They literally start deteriorating from the first wash, so it’s a LOT of upkeep.

I prefer pinks, I like how they fade more. The purples and blues seem to fade greenish gray on me, very icky. YMMV of course, no harm in trying it out and then adjusting after you see what you like.

I agree with slomotion above. I’ve also had my hair pretty much every color out there, and have had bright purple hair for years now. FYI I’m also 44 and am turning 45 in Nov and have kids. No one is “too old” to do what they want with their own hair!

As for upkeep, as mentioned above, you’ll want to rinse with cold water. This is especially important if you want to keep the colors in only part of your hair, because otherwise all the rest of your hair WILL get tinted with the colors, and you’ll have a whole head of pastel hair. For mine, since it’s all one color, I use a conditioner with some of the color added into it, to keep it looking fresh between visits to the salon. I also only wash my hair once a week, and only use conditioner on the other days.

I currently have some ‘peek-a-boo’ aquarmarine in my hair. Similar to the color in the picture you posted. I’m a red head and I LOVE it. I get a lot of compliments. I typically only wash my hair once a week and the color faded some and looked more greenish after a bit but still looked good in contrast with my natural hair color….. I re-colored it after about two months. I’m 35 if that matters any 🙂

Glasgowbound :  The execution of colours like your picture is REALLY difficult.  So make sure you go to a hairdresser who specialises in crazy colours.  It can look awful if not executed well.

This was my hair when I got it done in April, it’s faded now but still quite purple, I don’t wash it, I co wash (conditioner to wash and conditioner again) wash in cool water and also bought travel bottles for shampoo and some semi permanent hair dye, popped some of each colour in with conditioner in bottles, apply and leave for 5 minutes.

its lasted quite well considering 🙂

Glasgowbound :  no one is too old for anything ever. Youll be “the cool teacher”. Do it. One of my friends has a full head of very bright hair ahd she says she only washes it once a week in cool water to keep her color from fadeing too fast

Glasgowbound :  My hair is long-layered, and dark brown. Last year, I died chunks underneath blue. I kept it up for 6 mos. I was 42 at the time. Everyone who noticed loved it. To upkeep, I used Ion color in Sapphire. I would re-dye about every 2 weeks. For reference, I wash my hair almost every day. I loved it, and would absolutely do it again. Go for it!

When I had platinum blonde hair in grad school, I would do a pastel pink occasionally. My bleached hair didn’t hold color well, so even if I waited for several days to wash it and used cold water, it always faded after washing. Eventually I tried washing with the pastel pink conditioner from Overtone, and that helped.

I’ve never done multiple colors at once because I knew the upkeep with colored conditioners would be tough. If you’ve never done an unnatural color before, then perhaps you could start with one color and see how you like the result and upkeep?

Glasgowbound :  I don’t think you’re too old, but I would just be careful to check your school’s policies ahead of time to make sure this won’t get you in trouble. I would love colorful hair, but my workplace doesn’t allow it.

Check your school administration policy. Even if there’s no dress code I’d consider the parent and administration “culture.” Beyond that it’s really a question of taste, not age. The reality is not everyone is a fan of unnatural hair color.
