Did anyone else do this? I’m considering bringing my own makeup and brushes to the wonderful lady who will be doing my makeup. Is this strange? Most foundations work really poorly with my skin and because of this, a great MUA may do what looks to be a poor job, when really it’s my weird skin. Also, I know brushes are cleaned, but it still grosses me out to not use own.
I have just one makeup brush though. Which brushes should I purchase?

An artist of any kind needs to be confident in the tools they are using – you can’t just give her a random brush and expect her to be comfortable with it. Density, quality, hair type etc will vary massively between brushes.
If you’re really concerned, you can always ask which brushes she uses and buy the same – that way you can be confident that she is experienced with those tools, and that you can recreate/touch up.

By all means take your own makeup along – the MUA may not use it, but at least they will know what you are used to using and may adapt accordingly. As for brushes, that’s a huge no-no. Each person has to use their own tools of the trade. Their brushes are likely to be much higher quality/a lot more expensive that what you would use, and they will be used to the stiffness/coverage etc that they can create. If it grosses you out that much, either run the risk of spending a fortune on brushes you’ll never use again or reconsider going to a MUA at all.

Thank you for the very good advice!

My MUA told me right away that if I had any special makeup/color/products I wanted to wear I should bring them and she’d be happy to use them. They of course want you to be happy with your look! There should be no problems for you to bring a foundation you know works on you.
I agree makeup artists need to be familar with the brushes they are using though…. I would expect them to use their own tools, which they’ve invested in quite a bit. You wouldn’t hire a photographer and then tell them to use your point-and-shoot instead of their professional gear, right?
Since you seem concerned, I’d ask her about her standard brush cleaning procedures – hopefully that will set your mind at ease!

I had my MUA use my eye makeup, because the colors were what I wanted. She used the same brands, so I didn’t think twice about it. I agree with PPs, let her use her own brushes. It will ensure the correct application. If you really want new ones, ask her to buy them and work them into the cost (and then you keep them).
